What Defines a Goal?

In order for something to be a goal:

It has to be important to you, personally.

It has to be within your power to make it happen through your own actions.

It has to be something you have a reasonable chance of achieving.

It must be clearly defined and have a specific plan of action.

Exercise 2

Take a blank piece of paper and fold it so there are four equal columns (fold in half and then in half again)

Title the first column “What I want to do with my life”

Title the second column “What I want to accomplish in the next 1-5 years”

Title the third column “ If I only had 6 months to live, how would I spend my time”

Leave the fourth column blank right now

Page 14: YOUR ROAD MAP Path Ways to College and Career Readiness- Workshop 1

Exercise 2 continued

Write whatever pops into your head

Page 15: YOUR ROAD MAP Path Ways to College and Career Readiness- Workshop 1

Exercise 2 Debrief

What do you think about what you have written down? Any surprises?

Were any of the sections harder to complete than the others?

What types of activities did you put on the “if I only had six months” column? These are the activities that you value most Now go back and make a final list that combines the “6

months to live list” items with elements from the other two lists. Title the blank column “My Goals” and be sure to put your career AND personal goals on the list

The Basic Rules of Goal Setting

1. Define the goal.*

2. Outline the steps needed to achieve it.

3. Consider possible blocks and ways of dealing with them.

4. Set deadlines.

*Not every wish can be a goal. For instance, you may wish you could live and stay young forever, but since there's nothing you can do to make that happen, it could never be considered a goal.

What do you think he was thinking as he stood in his office on the first day of his Presidency?

He had no idea how to accomplish all that lay before him

What emotions do you think he experienced?

Did he know that Rugby would enable him to end Apartheid?
