Week 3 Computer Lab - Email Accounts

Agenda

Features of Gmail's platform. Go over sub-platform of an email letter. Ss send an email to the teacher. Receive and open an email from Teacher.

Getting on the Internet and onto Gmail.com

Objectives:

Beg. Ss WBAT follow step-by-step instructions on how to create an account.

Adv. Ss WBAT self-direct through the steps and finish on their own.

T will demonstrate to Ss on front-board the following processes, then walk Ss step-by-step through it. T will point cursor to Safari Icon and explain to the students that through "search engines/ medios de

busqueda", we are able to enter the internet world, like a portal. Usually to get through this portal we have to pay for internet, unless we go to a coffee shop or somewhere we can get free wi-fi.

T instructs Ss to place their cursor on the Safari icon and click. T instructs Ss to type gmail.com in search bar when it appears. When the image above appears, T asks students if they already have an account to raise

their hands. (In my class only about 1/5 had an account but some had forgotten their names or passwords so they created a new account).

T draws attention to the small blue letters below the grey box and tells students to click here to create an account.

Populating the blanks spaces/ Rotulando los espacios en blanco. T tells students to point their cursor to the Name boxes and enter First name, then Last name.

T instructs Ss to look at next row and create a made-up name as their username, be creative or funny. T stresses the importance of writing it down because it will be their email address/domicilio electronico, like

their home address, without which in a new home they might not be able to find, until they memorized the

route and address. Also, if it is already taken the program will offer you other options so you must write it down!!

T writes a fictitious email address to help the students understand that whatever name they choose will also have the gmail.com attached to it as a "complete" address.

[email protected] T then has Ss create a password which should have both letters and numbers. It could have symbols and

upper and lowercase letters, but students need to also write it down on paper so they can log-on next time they are on the computer.

Ss should re-type in password EXACTLY how they typed it in the first time, which they should have written it down. If it doesn't match, the program will let you know and you'll have to re-type the password twice, again.

Ss should click on the birthday month tab and scroll down to the correct month and click. Ss should type their birth day in the next box, if their bday starts from 1-9, they'll need to add a 0 first, i.e.,

01, 02, 03, 04…09. Ss should type in the four digits for the year. Gender: T explains "gender" is supposed to mean what is their biological sex: feminine or masculine, male

or female? Phone # and other email addresses are not necessary, click on NEXT to proceed to next step.

See above for an example of a proper populated gmail account form. The ficticious student's name is Estudieante Femenino.

What a successfully created account, welcome and confirmation looks like, above. Ss should be looking for this to know if they succeeded. T will draw attention to the page above so students can look for the "Welcome" to know if they

succeeded, otherwise they should call for assistance. Ss should click on blue box, Continue to Gmail.

Below, Ss will see this image once they enter their mailbox. T explains that just like they have a physical mailbox in which they get paper letters, bills and mail, etc.

in this mailbox, they will get "electronic mail", which saves paper (unless they want to print it), saves time through the land mail route and saves stamp money.

T draws attention to the left column of the page, to the word "Inbox" and asks them what do they think this means?

T waits for answers and confirms correct answers and clarifies that, it is a letter "IN" their mailBOX. Ss will see their Full Menu. They will see how many messages they have, in the image below this

person only has one. Ss should click on the grey box with the number of messages to see their mail.

Below Ss will see their message(s), in a blue high-lighted box. In this case there is only one message, but they could have numerous messages.

Ss should pick one and click on it to open it. When they click on blue box, the message will appear to the right.

The image below is the Ss now empty mailbox.

Composing a letter/Escribiendo un correo. T draws attention to the 'small red box with a pencil in it". T tells students to click on red pencil icon to write an email.

The screen below will appear after Ss click on red pencil icon. T instructs Ss that they must fill three (3) sections below to write a complete email. T draws attention to the first line, To, and asks Ss, "What does 'To' mean?" Ss should respond, "Who you are sending the letter to", "the recipient", "A quien le mandas el correo". T tells students they are to address and send an email to her.

T writes her email on front board: [email protected]. Ss should type this full address under "To". T explains to Ss that the next area they should fill-out is the "Subject" line. The subject line is for them to

write a concise, brief description of what the email is about. T tells students to write their full name so she knows who she is receiving an email from. Under the subject line, the Ss will see a large, blank space in which they are to write their homework,

essays, poems, and any work they will send to me. They must use correct punctuation, capital letters where needed, etc. and write in ENGLISH.

The following image is a "correctly" populated email. T goes over the information below and asks, "To who is the email addressed". Ss should answer, "To [email protected]". T asks, "What is in the subject line?" Ss respond, "The name of the student the letter is from, her name is …Estudiante Femenia. T asks, "What is she sending [email protected]? Ss respond, "A poem, her homework, etc. T points the two (2) small, blue boxes on the right side of the email form and explains that when the

Ss have finished their letter, they are to click either one of the blue send boxes to "send" their email.Once it is sent it can not be "unsent".

In the image below, the T will explain that if they want to go back to the "Main Menu", they must click on the Black-lettered, "Gmail" tab and they will come to the page below where they can check their: inbox, sent mail, and even thrashed mail if they need to retrieve or look at it again. T asks Ss to click on "Sent Mail".

Page 10: maestrahuerta.weebly.com  · Web viewT will point cursor to Safari Icon and explain to the students that through "search engines/ medios de busqueda", we are able to enter the internet

In the image below the Tab: Sent Mail has been clicked and the students can see what they have sent.

In the image below, the students will log-out. T has Ss click on small box, lower left column as seen below. T brings to Ss attention to double check that they have "written down" their complete email as shown in this

box. If not they are to copy it exactly as it is here. Ss should also make sure they have their "passwords" written on the same paper as their email address to be

able to log-in next computer session.

ReflectionsAOL.com SUCKED!!! We first tried AOL.com because this is the email server I use and am familiar with, but it could not handle 15 people trying to create email accounts and kept "timing-out" because the Ss were slow to type and create their usernames and passwords. One by one, the Ss computers kept showing "timed-out" or "server-error" and would not allow Ss to create an account. Only two Ss from the first class were able to create and account. For the next class rotation, I didn't bother with AOL, we created Gmail accounts and the server worked beautifully. Everyone got an account. About 3:15 students already had gmail accounts, but had either forgotten their username or passwords, so they just created a new acccount. Everyone in the 2nd class completed the task and sent me their very first email, some with no or incompleted writing or homework since we ran out of time. We will have to create gmail email accounts next week for the first half of class who was not able to do so because of sucky AOL.
