Reading StaminaStamina: Doing something for a long period of time without giving up

*Over the next few weeks we are going to be building up our reading stamina. I can teach students the strategies to keep their attention focused on their task, but they are responsible for practicing and implementing the strategies. Students will take a 2 hour long writing and reading FSA test and must be able to use stamina to finish both successfully.

Reading Stamina Strategies:-Read with a purpose/ focus (Are you reading for enjoyment? Are you reading to determine the main idea?)-Reread if you catch yourself zoning out-Reread is something sounds confusing to you and you need to better understand it-Look for unfamiliar words and use context clues (or key words from the sentence) and word parts (prefixes, suffixes) to help you figure out the meaning. -Take note of important details in the story or text (write them on a post it note, scratch sheet of paper, take a mental note, etc.)-Read out loud to hold yourself accountable for actually reading and not just starring.*At the end of each page, you should be able to give a 1 sentence summary of what just occurred. If you can’t, you haven’t been actively thinking as you are reading and you need to reread.

How to Practice Your Stamina:

-Set a timer while you read and extend your time each day by 5 minutes. -Once you sit down to read, you do not get up, for any reason, until you have finished your timed reading.-You check in on your understanding by describing all of the main details that have happened while you read. (No zoning out)
