Aidan kept thinking about what his father said. He didn’t hurt anyone when he cheated on his test. Was it fair for him to be grounded when his own father was doing something wrong? What should he do the next time his father makes his brother walk under the turnstile?

His parents were called to school. At the principal’s office, Aidan sat in a corner while his parents, the math teacher and the principal discussed the school policy on cheating. After dinner that night, Aidan’s mom and dad made it very clear how disappointed they were at him and explained that cheating wouldn’t take him anywhere. They also said he was grounded and that he couldn’t play basketball anymore. Aidan could barely sleep that night – he was sad and guilty for letting his parents down. He also thought he set a bad example to Jack, his 5-year-old brother.

Two weeks later, Aidan, his dad and Jack had tickets for a basketball game in Manhattan. When they got to the turnstile at the subway station, Jack walked under the turnstile, as he always did. The boy was tall for his age and Jack wondered if it was right for him not to pay the subway fare. An MTA worker looked suspiciously at Aidan’s brother and dad for some time and eventually shook his head, as if realizing the boy was too tall for a free ride. Then Aidan remembered that only children under 44 inches could ride for free on subways. Jack was 48 inches tall.

On the subway, Aidan asked his father why he was grounded for cheating on a test when it was OK to cheat the subway fare. His father frowned, hesitated for a moment, and then quickly replied that adults could cheat sometimes, as long as nobody got hurt.

Aidan is a student in a high school in Queens, New York. Last month, he was caught cheating on a test. His grades in math were low and his parents had told him that if he didn’t get better grades, he would be out of the school basketball team. So he cheated, using a cell phone to check the answers. When the teacher caught him, he admitted to his fault immediately.
