Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

From Father Jim“Elijah prayed for death, saying: This is enough, O Lord. Take my life, for I am no better than my fathers. He lay down and fell asleep under the broom tree, but then an angel touched him and ordered him to get up and eat…for the angel of the Lord came back a second time, touched him and ordered ‘Get up and eat, else the journey will be too long for you.’ He got up, ate and drank…he walked forty days and nights to the mountain of God, Horeb.”

We return to Capernaum and find Jesus telling us ‘I AM the bread of life.’ It is in the Eucharist we find Jesus present to accompany us on our journey. Elijah was awakened twice and was ordered to brace himself for the journey. Jesus is the bread of life for us. We often overlook how great, how important, how necessary is this gift for our spiritual survival.

How many people in the world die each day of starvation? Too many, and we are called to assist them. How many people in the church take the gift of the Eucharist for granted? Where in our world are people deprived of what is so essential, yet we sometimes take the mass and Eucharist for granted. If Jesus is the bread of life, I need to go to Him with renewed fervor and gratitude. ‘Get up and eat, else the journey will be too long for you.’

We extend a warm welcome to our new parishioners:

Mr. Thomas Petito

Congratulations to the couple(s) who has recently been married in the parish:

Mr. and Mrs. Jeffrey and Samantha Adkins

Readings for next week:20 th Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Reading: Proverbs 9:1-6A rich woman invites many guests to her home to eat and drink. She appeals to those who lack understanding to forsake foolishness and “advance in the way of understanding.”Second Reading: Ephesians 5:15-20Paul advises the Ephesians to abandon foolish ways and evil deeds. All Christians should concentrate on doing God’s will before all other things. He reminds them to always give thanks to God in the name of Jesus Christ.Gospel: John 6:51-58Jesus had just told the crowd that anyone who ate of the bread he planned to give would live forever, and that this bread was his flesh, which he would give up for the sake of the world. The people do not understand, but Jesus reassures them that his flesh is real food and that “those who feed on this bread shall live forever.”

Less than 1 month left until the start of RCIA!

Are you unbaptized and have a desire to be baptized? Are you a baptized Christian interested in becoming a Catholic? Are you a baptized Catholic who never received the sacraments of Eucharist or Confirmation? If you answered yes to any of these questions then RCIA is for you!!

A new RCIA program will be starting September 20th. RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is the process by which baptized Christians and those who are unbaptized become members of the Catholic Church. It is also the process by which baptized Catholics who never received the sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation receive those sacraments. Are you being called to have a deeper relationship with God? If so, please call the Parish Office at 410-398-1100 or email [email protected] to learn more about RCIA and to register for RCIA. The RCIA process is a wonderful way to have a greater understanding of the Catholic faith and become closer to God in the process.

Sponsors are also needed to walk with those who are learning about the Catholic faith through the RCIA process. Do you love your faith? Do you want to share it with others? Please consider being a sponsor for RCIA. Call 410-398-1100 to sign up!

DOES YOUR CHILD NEED TO BE BAPTIZED?The next Baptism Class is, August 20th, 7:00-8:30 pm in the Parish Center. It’s never too early to prepare for the Baptism of your child. Parents are required and Godparents are encouraged to attend. Contact the Parish Office to register at 410-398-1100.

ADORATION FOR VOCATIONSOn the 1st Sunday of each month, exposition of the Blessed Sacrament occurs from 1pm-3pm in IC Chapel. Join us to pray for vocations to priesthood and religious life. The next opportunity is September 2nd. Contact Dermott Mullan at 410-398-3368.
