PIPE ORGAN FUNDIt's time to raise

the pitch on the organ pipe display in the church lobby! We reached a new level of $233,349.00 raised.

We are grateful to our donors, to those who dedicated pipes, and to those who sponsored Bechter's Mountain Climbs or Bike-a-thon. With help from some sponsors we hope to raise the remaining one hundred-seventeen thousand.

The need to maintain this church building is important and never-ending. However, the stewardship of a person’s soul and spiritual life is even more important. Your generous gift will help to maintain both the physical church and the spiritual Church. Through sacred music we can experience a closer relationship to God. It is our goal to restore the 111-year old church organ for this Catholic Community, for future generations to worship, and for the benefit of Akron at large. THANK YOU! We can’t do it without your support.

The K of C is one of the largest fraternal organizations of charitable Catholic men in the world. Maybe you would like to be part of their world-wide mission on a local level. Check their website: www.kofc.org. Or speak with Fr. Frank or another Knight here in the parish about their work.

Calming the Emotional

Storms: 4 Keys to Finding

Emotional PeaceIn this practical but spiritual presentation, Dr. Gregory Popcak

discusses four keys to develop self-awareness and self mastery. He reveals that emotions are a gift from God and that they can help you grow in virtue. Learn how to master your feelings and calm your emotional storms so that you can experience the peace of Christ.

Parishioner CommentsThe Popcaks' suggestions for calming the emotional storms that arise in life are very insightful. I learned a very loving approach to healing relationships.

Mary - Reston, VALearning how to achieve emotional peace is an important topic, and I believe this message will bless many lives!

Blessed Pier Giorgio

Frassati - Man of the Beatitudes

Born in 1901 in Turin, Italy into a

family of wealth and status, Pier Giorgio enjoyed good friends, hiking and skiing, museums and music, and was involved in political action, He found that deep prayer, service to the poor, and a passion for bringing others to Christ led to a life of purpose, peace, and happiness. Pier Giorgio died at the age of 24 on July 4, 1925. He was beatified on May 20, 1990 by Pope John Paul II who referred to him as a "man of the beatitudes".

Parishioner CommentsThank you so much for this talk! This has provided me the encouragement and assurance that a poor sinner like me truly can become a saint.

Jeremy - Haubstadt, INWow! I now have a new understanding of the word 'saint'

Aborting America: The Story of an Ex-Abortionist and Ex-Atheist

Bernard Nathanson was an American medical doctor from New York who helped to found the National Abortion Rights Action League, but then later became an acclaimed pro-life activist. He gained national

attention by becoming one of the founding members of the National Abortion Rights Action League, now known as NARAL Pro-Choice America. He worked with Betty Friedan and others for the legalization of abortion in the United States. He was also for a time the director of the Center for Reproductive and Sexual Health New York's largest abortion clinic. Nathanson has written that he was responsible for more than 75,000 abortions throughout his pro-choice career.

Parishioner Comments"Nathanson is intellectual and articulate, talks slowly and is easy to understand, is passionate, is credible because he has been on both sides of the abortion issue and was an atheist before opening himself to new life through Christ. He is a superb speaker."

Amazing story that more people need to hear. I am sharing with our church.

Carol - Fredonia, WI

The MAGI were guided by the light of a star. Check our LIGHTHOUSE for media that can guide your way.Dear St. Bernard Community,

Welcome to the 21st Century!! The days of handing on and teaching the Catholic faith through the priest in a pulpit, transcribing by a monk in a scriptorium, or the artist in a fresco or stained glass window has now taken on an additional medium: THE INTERNET.

Currently our pastoral council is viewing and critiquing a revolutionary digital resource called "FORMED". If the council agrees, EVERY member of our St. Bernard parish community, in every household, will have 24/7 access to feature films, video-based study programs, audio presentations, and eBooks from the Church's foremost presenters.

I suggest this for our parish because we can reach a wide range of folks without leaving home: whether they are actively involved in their faith or have fallen away; whether they are in school or retired; whether they want to watch a video or prefer to read a book; there is something for everyone 24/7 for FREE in English or Español.

FORMED can also be a savings for our Adult Faith sessions, RCIA instructions, a support for teaching children the faith, or for preparing people to receive the sacraments, such as marriage. Check out their website: https://formed.org. The Catholic Faith. On Demand.

Thank you to all the volunteers who decorated the church this Christmas Season, and then to all who came or stayed behind last Sunday night to dismantle everything. Wow! It was a record 31 minutes to put everything away. Unless Jesus comes again ... See you all next December!

It's a harsh winter this year. Please watch your step when walking across the parking lot or on the outside stairs. Our thanks to the Knights of Columbus Council 547 who purchased new carpets at our church entrances. Please be careful walking

down our marble aisles with wet shoes or boots.

This is the last weekend to find your 2017 Box of Offering Envelopes in the cross-aisle of the church. The remaining envelopes will be stored in the parish office and given to those requesting them for the coming year.

You may have noticed that there is one less Offering Envelope in your 2017 Box. We have discontinued the Fr. Hilkert School Fund envelope. If you wish to make a donation for St. Mary School, please make it directly to the school or through the Akron Community Foundation, St. Mary Urban Education Initiative, Inc. This September the School marks its 130th Year of Catholic Education, 1887-2017. We continue as a Ministry of Education in the Catholic tradition; a blessing to many Akron children and their families.

Frequently someone will request a letter to show they are a practicing Catholic who worships with this Community regularly. They need it because they have been asked to be a Godparent or a Sponsor, or to verify membership for the Immigration Office. The envelope in the Collection Basket at Mass is a major resource for me to truthfully confirm that someone is worshipping with us and supporting the Parish. If I do not know you, and our records do not have you, then it is left to my memory of having seen you weekly at Mass or seen you involved in our volunteer ministries. If I cannot verify that you are here, I can't help.

On most Federal Holidays the 12:10 PM Daily Mass is celebrated at 9:30 AM here. For this year and beginning this Monday, the 9:30 AM Mass on Dr. Martin Luther King Day will be held in St. Mary church - 750 S. Main St. - one mile south of St. Bernard. And, the next Mass at St. Mary on a Federal Holiday: Monday, May 29, Memorial Day - when the majority of downtown offices are closed.

Please remember in your prayers our people who are ill, in hospital, rehab, or homebound. Our Eucharistic Ministers maintain a connection with them. But, your spiritual aid with prayer is a plus.

This week we welcome back from their Christmas Recess the University of Akron students, and especially the RooCatholics who will resume meeting for dinner and fellowship on Wednesdays in the Newman Center.

Page 5: €¦ · Web viewCELEBRATE THE WORD - Join parishioners in a deeper understanding of God's Word. Hear it, Share it, and Live it! ... fol. lowing the synod on family life,

And finally, we welcome and ACCEPT the following men and women into the next stage of preparation for the Sacraments of Initiation: Trevor Plog, Liz Rapp, and Jesse Tilton. Our prayers for them and a fellow Christian joining the Catholic Community: Megan Francy. God bless, Fr. Dan
