TNCF 2017 DRAFT SYLLABUS COMMUNICATIVE ENGLISH – STANDARD XI Communicative English, as a subject, is intended to familiarize the student in the use of the language in real-life situations. It also aims to develop greater confidence and proficiency in the use of language skills necessary for social and academic purposes through group discussions/interviews, short oral presentations on given topics, to build communicative competence in various registers of English, to promote activity-driven advanced language skills, to develop proficiency in reasoning, deduction and induction, to develop ability and knowledge required in order to engage in independent reflection and enquiry, to develop curiosity and creativity through extensive reading. TNCF 2017 DRAFT SYLLABUS COMMUNICATIVE ENGLISH – STANDARD XI

Communicative English, as a subject, is intended to familiarize the student in the use of

the language in real-life situations. It also aims to develop greater confidence and proficiency

in the use of language skills necessary for social and academic purposes through group

discussions/interviews, short oral presentations on given topics, to build communicative

competence in various registers of English, to promote activity-driven advanced language

Syllabus for Communicative English – Std XII

Background

The curriculum for Communicative English attempts to espouse the modern theories of second language acquisition

and recent trends in English Language Curriculum design. Language is not only a means of communication, it is also a

medium through which most of our knowledge is acquired. Language acquisition involves processes of scientific enquiry

such as observation of data, classification and categorization, hypothesis formation and its verification. The curriculum

aims to move from the system of language education based on rote learning, linguistic correctness to a system of

communicative competence.

Objectives:

To develop the use of English for social interaction, academic achievement and cultural enrichment.

To develop thinking skills, study skills and promote autonomous learning

To develop linguistic proficiency.

To enable the leaner to access knowledge and information through reference skills.

To build competence in the different registers of English.

Outcomes:

By the end of the course, the students should be able to
