+iTunes

Open your iTunes application

Click on Podcasts in the left text boxes

You can also publish your own podcast to iTunes for the world to hear by clicking here

+What you will need to podcast…

An external microphone – cost ranges from under $20 to $100+. (Optional but good if you are going to have students record with other students in the classroom – noise-cancelling mics are best)

External speakers for sharing the finished podcast with the class

Quicktime - Mac, Windows Media Player – PC, for playing

Photobooth application (optional, if you want to take a picture of yourself or something with your webcam) – Mac only

Webcam if you want a picture of yourself (all new Macs come with them, PCs it is an option) – a cheap webcam is about $30+ and easy to install

+A typical podcast episode format…

20-30 minutes in length total for a full episode

Intro. to show (30-60 sec.)

Jingle music (30-60 sec.)

Topic 1 (5 min.)

Topic 2 (5 min.)

Interlude – jingle music (30 sec.)

Topic 3 or 4 or 5 (5 min. each)

Closing remarks – thanks for listening, preview of next show, etc. (2 min.)

Closing music – same as beginning jingle (1-2 min.)

+Let’s make a (very) simple podcast!

Please locate these….. A picture (in .jpg format) to put in your

podcast Photobooth in the Applications folder on the

Hard Drive – (Macs) Open the Garageband or Movie Maker

application

+The Final Steps…(Mac version)

When you have the podcast finished the way you want it… Go to Share in the Toolbar at the top of the screen Click on “Export Podcast to Disk…” In the next window leave all settings “as is” and click

“Export” In the next window in “Save As” give it a name and in

“Where” select where you would like to save it to (I like the desktop so I can find it quickly) and then “Save”

Find your podcast on your desktop and open.

You’re Done!!

Now… how are you going to share it with the world?!?

+Final Steps… PC version

When you have your podcast the completed go to 3. Finish Movie at the left, then to “Save to my computer”

In the next window give it a name and where to save it, then click on Next

Click Next in the following window. It will now save your movie.

Leave the box checkmarked at the top in “Play movie when I click Finish – click Finish at the bottom

It will now open in Windows Media Player

The format you put on a website for viewing is in Windows Media Player – the icon with the colored circle – not in Movie Maker

+Final Step… PC version (cont.)

Remember – you make and edit your podcast in Movie Maker – you view it in Windows Media Player.

Once you have it in Media Player format, you can’t change it

+Tips and Tricks

Have all information, pictures and music picked before you start recording

Write out your script to read unless you are having a discussion or an interview. For an interview have a list of topics to discuss. This makes for a smoother sounding podcast, easier to listen to and less re-recording due to mistakes.

For the first podcast expect 3-4 class periods. Subsequent podcasts (if they have their information collected ahead of time) should only take 1 class period to record and 1 to edit.

+More Tips and Tricks

Be aware of copyright laws when using music. If using Garageband, all jingles are copyright-free If using Movie Maker check your school’s copyright policy

for using music clips

Be sure to check your school’s media release policy before posting any podcasts to the web

Flickr.com is a great place to get copyright free images. Be sure to check the Creative Commons section of the website to see if it’s available to distribute.
