May 29th
~Born in Brookline, Massachusetts ~He was the son of Joe and Rose
Kennedy
In June he graduates cum laude (with honors) with a bachelor of science degree from Harvard University.
September~He is sworn in as an ensign in the
U.S. Navy at age 24.
March~He was given command of PT-109 as
a lieutenant. August 3rd
~When PT-109 was on active duty in the Blackett Strait, North Solomon Islands in the Pacific Ocean it was sunk by the Japanese and Kennedy rescued he crew like a hero.
June 11th ~JFK was awarded the Navy and
Marine Corps Medal and Purple Heart for his actions while in command of PT-109.
August 12th ~Joe Kennedy Jr., John Kennedy’s
brother, is killed when his Air Force plane explodes shortly after he took off.
March 1st ~He was honorably discharged from
the Navy with full rank of lieutenant.
November 5th ~Was elected as a U.S. representative
for the 11th Congressional District in Boston at age 29.
He was re-elected as U.S. representative.
November 4th ~Elected as senator from
Massachusetts and was re-elected in 1958.
September 12th ~He and Jacqueline Lee Bouvier get
married in Newport, R.I. She was the daughter of John Vernon Bouvier III and Janet Lee Bouvier.
October 21st ~He had to undergo surgery for a back
injury he received during the PT-109 incident.
February ~Undergoes a second back operation,
when he almost dies~While he is recovering from that he
writes Profile in Courage, and that won a Pulitzer Prize for biography in 1957.
August 17th ~Loses his bid for the Democratic
nomination for vice president
August 23, 1956~Daughter, Arabella, is stillborn in
Newport, R.I. November 27, 1957
~Daughter Caroline Bouvier Kennedy is born at Cornell Medical Center, New York.
January 2nd ~Announced his candidacy for
president of the United States. July 13th
~Received the democratic nomination for president.
November 8th ~JFK defeats Richard M. Nixon to
become the 35th president of the U.S. He win by a margin of 2/10 of 1% with 49.75% of the votes. Nixon receives 49.55%.
~John Fitzgerald Kennedy Jr. is born at Georgetown University Hospital.
January 20th ~At age 43, takes the oath of office to
become the 35th president of the United States.
~He is the youngest elected president and the first president to be Roman Catholic.
March 1st ~Signs bill creating the Peace Corps
April 17th ~The Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba
occurs, Kennedy supports it, and it fails so then he gets heavily criticized.
September 12th ~He delivers a speech at Rice
University, pledging that the United States will put a man on the moon “before the end of this decade.” ~Seven years later, on July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong walks on the moon.
June 11th ~He sent National Guard to the
University of Alabama to protect two African American students who won a court order to attend the college.
~Then later in the day he expressed his support for the civil rights movement on television.
August 7th ~His second son, Patrick was born five
weeks premature and dies August 9th. October 7th
~Signs the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty in Washington, D.C.
November 22~John Fitzgerald Kennedy was shot at
12:30p.m. while riding in an open-top limousine in a motorcade through downtown Dallas.
~He was pronounced dead a 1 p.m. at Parkland Memorial Hospital and 8 minutes after the assassination, Lee Harvey Oswald is arrested and later charged with murder.
November 24~Jack Ruby fatally shoot Lee Harvey Oswald
November 25 ~JFK is buried in Arlington National Cemetery with his son Patrick and daughter Arabella.
November 29~President Lyndon B. Johnson appoints Warren Commission to investigate the assassination.
