‘Counting the Days’ attempts to connect various groups of folks whom, due to different circumstances, find themselves in a state of suspension in borderlands. In creative workshops, story-sharing and discussions, these folks co-create with artists and project team in different visual media that organise and present their stories of lived (and learned) experiences. In these works, vis-à-vis different cultural, social, and political contexts and backgrounds, they attempt to investigate the present — the here and now — which we all share, and within which, co-exist. The exhibition reveals the living status of different folks who have left home, settled in Hong Kong, and returned home, offering the audience textured glimpses into everyday moments and emotions in order to find a path towards each other.

Spinning in a rapid-paced life, do you still have the patience to wait, to expect?

While you might have already become impatient of waiting, there might still be a kind of expectation that would excite you — the anticipation of what a friend is going to say when you find this friend is typing a message to you on the phone. You might then prepare for the chat that is to take place, and for that, you knowingly smile.

So, we set “Museum is typing …” as the theme of this year’s Muse Fest HK, as a metaphor for the expectation of the museums and visitors exchanging dialogues with each other. During the festival, the museums will talk with you in different ways through an array of programmes, such as new exhibitions, workshops, talks, movies, music and fashion shows, etc. You can expect something wonderful to come up and you are welcomed to input your feedback! The museums look forward to a real and uninterrupted dialogue with you.

At the exhibition “sound in the city - Animamix Biennale 2017-18”, visitors could explore the worlds of virtuality and reality - interwoven by the aesthetic culture of animation and comics and the influence from technological advancements - through sound art.

Animamix is often considered part of a virtual and fantasy world in two dimensions, which is different from reality. Since the art form is mainly presented on two-dimensional media, its very nature has made it synonymous to “two dimensions”. In the world of two dimensions, common sense considerations and fear of incompatibility are unnecessary. One does not have to worry about what is possible and what is not either, because every imaginable matter can be achieved in this world. However, if animation is to break away from the two-dimensional world and transform into a product of the three-dimensional one, its existence would no longer be restricted to two dimensions; yet, it is not part of three dimensions either. Such an ambiguous state blurs the line that demarcates virtuality and reality. Soundtracks of animation tell stories with music notes and onomatopoeia. Dramatic and imaginary plotlines, on the other hand, are expressed with emotions and narratives like what ballad music does. In this sense, can we comprehend the voices and music expressed in the two-dimensional world of animation as virtual? Can we consider the voices and music generated in the three-dimensional world as real?

The scope of influence and popularity of the virtual world of animation is ever expanding. Younger generations have been heavily immersed in the influence of the virtual world since they are little. In the third edition of the Biennale, the Hong Kong exhibition will take a ride of the sound art with media technology to read, listen to and review how animation is affecting the contemporary visual culture, the current circumstances of our society, as well as values and culture in this age and time when virtuality and reality are intertwined.

Topic : Demonstration and performativity of soundSpeaker : GayBird LeungDate : 28.7.2018Language : Cantonese

The development of modern music has reached its peak in the last century; any sound (including silence), different instrumental techniques, composing techniques and creative ideas have pushed the possibility of creating music and sound to the limit. The emergence of new media technology would be a new way out for creative works. To artist GayBird Leung, music demonstration is way beyond sound and performance, the invention of new musical instrument, installation, moving image, programming, or even drawing and sculpture, all these sorts of things can be used as a medium to demonstrate and perform sound. In this talk, GayBird will share his new concepts for sound performance and expression by analyzing different works.

Leung Kei-cheuk, aka GayBird. Hong Kong born composer and new media artist. He was graduated from Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts with Master of Music degree, and obtained Master of Philosophy at the City University of Hong Kong. In 2017 he was supported by HKADC to participate in the 11th edition of OzAsia Festival to exhibit his first outdoor sound installation “Home” in Adelaide, Australia. In 2018, his media music performance "18 Scenes in a Cage" reconstructed a historic building into a performance venue, which recomposes and reforms elements of acoustics, electronics, audio media, found and environmental sound, human personification, sculpture, architecture and video. With broad experience across different spheres, his works are beyond music just for listening, but a cohesive work combining visuals, mechanism, programming, craftsmanship and installation art, that could offer a comprehensive music experience.

ArtTravellers Exhibition Series III

The word ‘souvenir’ is of French origin, which means ‘to remember’ and ‘to recall’. When we travel to foreign lands, we tend to acquire keepsake articles as a token of our presence and remembrance. Among the countless souvenir items, some like to collect match boxes, postcards with scenic prints or landmark keychains, magnets etc., while some prefer to collect things that cannot be bought in souvenir shops.

September 2018 will see the opening of the third ‘# ArtTravellers’ exhibition series, which takes place over a span of three years, at the Trade and Industry Tower. Organised by the Art Promotion Office, the exhibition features two local artists, Carol Lee Mei-kuen and Trevor Yeung, who will present their unique travelogue of gleanings. Working in different mediums, Lee and Yeung both take inspiration from a wide variety of exotic plant collections gathered during their travels and re-express them in personalised artistic expressions. The transformation process involves botanic observations and discoveries in natural origins, creating new artistic idioms and opening up a universal panorama.

Carol Lee Mei-kuen likes to visit historical destinations, where she could trace the cultural provenance and observe the natural sequence of happenings. With the wild plants picked along the way, she would press them to retain their shapes of a ‘frozen’ frame of time. The seemingly insignificant elements, when put together, would form a totem of foreign lands. Trevor Yeung, on the other hand, would gather different plant species from around the world. Through horticulture and installations, he juxtaposes the relationship between natural landscapes and cultural ecology, while slowly exposing the growth patterns of different plants under photosynthesis. The geographical difference between various species is hence blurred, giving birth to an unusual bonsai that resembles a miniature urban greenhouse.
