GEO BON – GEO Ecosystem tasks Mandates

Before 2015, GEO aims to:

Ecosystem

10. “Establish, in conjunction with a comprehensive biodiversity observation network, a wide-ranging monitoring capability for all ecosystems and the human impacts on them, to improve the assessment, protection and sustainable management of terrestrial, coastal and marine resources and the delivery of associated ecosystem services.”

Extracted from “GEO 2015 Strategic Targets”

Biodiversity

7. “Establish, in conjunction with a comprehensive ecosystem monitoring capability, a worldwide biodiversity observation network to collect, manage, share and analyze observations of the status and trends of the world's biodiversity, and enable decision-making in support of the conservation and improved management of natural resources.”

GEO-BON – The Network

GEO-BON is a collaboration of more then 100 governmental, inter-governmental and non-governmental organizations, including DIVERSITAS, GBIF, IUCN, NASA, UNEP-WCMC and others, working on:• A global Biodiversity Observation Network to observations

on biodiversity status and trends• Decision-support for conservation and management of

resources• Organized in genes, species, ecosystems i.e. marine,

freshwater, terrestrial working groups• Address National and regional needs through Regional

BONs, such as French BON, Arctic BON, ASEAN BON, AP BON, EU BON etc

GEO BON has been recognized by the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity, and is supported to develop set of Essential Biodiversity Variables (EBVs) developed akin to GCOS ECVs

How to collaborate

Participation in the GEO BON task

Products under development including: Global Wetland Observing System

(GWOS) A harmonised Ecosystem Map A global network of Biodiversity

Observation Sites Filling of major geographical gaps in

the monitoring network Expansion of monitoring programs

for birds, mammals, plants and butterflies

Organisation of join workshops Thematic or regional

Also with the other GEO Tasks e.g GLC and Green Energy planning)
