August, 2007

Dear Lithuanian Foundation members,

The annual Grants Committee deliberations are the key step of a year’s hard work to grow LF’s membership and capital base, all with an eye to fulfilling our prime objective of supporting charitable, educational and cultural activities of US and world wide Lithuanian expatriate communities. For 2007, the Lithuanian Foundation’s Board authorized allocation up to a total of $ 600,000 for scholarships and grants.

The Scholarship Subcommittee, consisting of Tadas Kulbis (Chair), Sigita Baniulyte, Jurate Budrys, Vanesa Kaselionis, Juozas Polikaitis, and Andrius Tamulis, evaluated 118 requests and recommended granting 81 scholarships, totaling $124,338.

The Grant Committee composed of Lithuanian Foundation Directors, Algirdas Saulis (Chair), Vytautas Kamantas, Almis Kuolas, and Jurate Budrys (Alternate) and Lithuanian American Community, Inc. delegates, Rasa Juskys, Janina Birute Litvinas, Dainius Skripkauskas, and Elona Vaisnys (Alternate), convened to consider 173 grant requests totaling over $2,000,000. After thorough consideration of all the requests, a total of $413,314 was allocated to fully or partially support 128 projects.

The preparation for the allocation meetings was very demanding of the time and patience of all Committee members. I am grateful to all for their energy and their dedication, which made the task very manageable and smooth. My sincere thanks go to Zivile Ramasauskiene, Grants Coordinator, LF office staff, and volunteer Dalia Jecys for successful document digitization and tireless data organization. They were a major contributor to the success of the project.

The Lithuanian Foundation Board of Directors, at their June 26, 2007 meeting, approved the recommended grant and scholarship allocations. The Grants Committee will convene this fall to distribute the remaining $6,520 for scholarships and $55,828 for grants. Although many projects were supported, others that were worthwhile could not be, because of financial constraints.

The population of Lithuanians living outside of Lithuania has mushroomed. A large proportion of these are young, raising children, or starting their families. There is a rapidly expanding need for resources to help establish new heritage schools, to support new youth organizations, and to encourage the development of an increasing number and variety of cultural activities. The ability of the Lithuanian Foundation to satisfy these developing needs depends on you, our members, and on your generous support.

On behalf of the Lithuanian Foundation, I extend a heartfelt thank you for your past support and hope you will continue to join us in promoting a vital Lithuanian cultural life here in America and in other countries where new Lithuanian communities are being established.

Sincerely,

Algirdas Saulis2007 Grants Committee Chair

“Greetings to the Lithuanian Foundation for the 39th Teacher In-service Camp at Camp Dainava”. 23 teachers, 37 children, and 17 adults learning Lithuanian as a second language attended this year. We are grateful the the Lithuanian Foundation for its consistent support, without which, these moments would have remained merely a part of someone’s imagination”. So writes Daiva Navickas, current Chair of Lithuanian Educational Council of the USA.

The Lithuanian Foundation supports Lithuanian media. Silvia Krumplys, administrator of “The Lithuanian World-Wide Daily DRAUGAS”, expresses gratitude for the long-lived support from the Lithuanian Foundation. She writes: “DRAUGAS unites the different immigration waves, different generations, and helps fuse Lithuanian culture over the decades…we are determined to continue working for all Lithuanian émigrés, so that they could view the world in their native language”

The Foundation supports a variety of cultural events. Among them is the Lithuanian Opera which is unique among all émigré communities in their staging of major operatic works in the Lithuanian language.

The Lithuanian Foundation supports the publishing of numerous historical works. One of these is “The Encyclopedia of Lithuania Minor” which presents the heritage of Lithuania Minor to Lithuania and the world, showing its’ in-put into Lithuanian and European cultural development.

I am thankful for the scholarship from Lithuanian Foundation. After receiving B.S. (Summa Cum Laude) from Benedictine University, I am continuing my studies in the field of medicine. Thanks to the generosity of the Lithuanian Foundation members, my hard work and my goal to achieve a degree became a reality. I’ve become a member of the Foundation, hoping that, in my own small way, scholarships will be available to other deserving students long into the future.
