Masthead

The masthead is the title of the magazine.

The masthead of this magazine lies to the left of the front cover, which is quite unusual for Sixth Form magazines, but it still manages to stand out on the front cover through its size and underlining. This demonstrates how important the masthead is for a Sixth Form magazine.

Dominant Cover Image

On this front cover, the dominant cover image acts as the background. They have created verisimilitude and ideology through the semantic field of education (classroom, posters, work).

The focus point of the dominant cover image is the two students sat at the table, this gives theidea that the magazine is mainly focused around pupils.

The skyline lays above the masthead and holds important information about the magazine.

As this is a Sixth Form (college) magazine, the skyline in this case is used to specify which the magazine is from.

Barcode - Iconography

A barcode is very archetypal of magazines in general, although the use of a barcode in this example is unusual as sixth form magazine don’t often need to be bought in a shop.

Due to this, I will not use a barcode in my preliminary task.

Strap Line

The strapline sums up the magazine and is often a slogan.

This strap line is a slogan, and directly speaks to the reader. This demonstrated how the magazine is written for a more specific sociographic (e.g. the specification of ‘sixth form’)
