The design and overview

• An enclosed garden, with sumptuous summer colours and a modern abstract approach to classic design, that focuses on the most potent but most neglected element in garden-making - fragrance.

• The impetus behind it is Ann-Marie Powell's and Stephen Lacey's long-standing friendship and keeness to do a show garden together, and Stephen's passion for scented plants - he is the author of the main reference book on the subject.

Features of the Garden:

• Taking visitors on a journey through different zones of scent, introducing them to the full panoply of scents available, and encouraging them to distinguish between the different flavours, and to take up the challenge of trying to describe and categorise scents.

• Walls and waist-high hedging panels create a stylish sense of enclosure, helping to capture scent in the air, and together with the long, plant-draped pergola, give a series of framed views over the garden.

• The numerous pathways, edged in scented foliage to brush against, also allow close encounters with the scented flowers, which the pergola, pots and sweet pea tripods will present at nose height.

• The reflective pool and other open spaces give pauses in the design and moments of contemplation.

• The rear courtyard space, within a glade of scented magnolia trees, offers an especially intimate space, with an inviting place to sit.

• The dimensions of the garden, replicating many plots at home, will offer design inspiration, and more importantly, encourage the public to consider how to better use, place and blend scents in their own gardens.

• We believe this strongly themed garden will offer a fresh and original experience for visitors.

General considerations

• The garden has strong sustainable elements by using contemporary British materials in the hard landscaping, and inspiring planting that can be replicated in a suburban, urban and rural setting. The garden we propose is very much ‘a gardener’s garden’ and we believe that the design will capture the imagination of all who view it.

Size of the garden

• Show garden designed as 10 x 22m

Budget

• The cost of the garden is estimated to be in the region of £150,000+ VAT

• Design fees are included in the budget costs above.

Multiple audiences

• There are four core audiences we have considered in our garden proposal for our show garden at RHS Hampton Court:

– Client colleagues and staff

– Visitors to the show; inspirational views from outside the garden, ensuring people stop, look and are driven to find out more

– The RHS judges; quality of garden design and fulfilling our submitted RHS garden brief

– Guests / VIPs / press guests / TV crews / journalists; provide an immersive journey through the garden, with plenty of ‘stories’ attached that will inspire media coverage

Creating a variety of discussion points

• The elements within the garden will provide various talking points and news items for press and media and the general public

• TV presenters / journalists will be be able to discuss a range of activities, news items and experiences
