O'Reillys Irish Cream Product Package

Assessing the IssuesLooking at the bottle in appearance I find a lot of design flaws as well as marketing issues when I bought the bottle originally. Sold originally with a glass as well and displayed inside a box also poorly designed.

One of my issues in the package was the fact that it had a gold medal rating for taste which was not upholded by the packaging as well. Which eventually emphasizes my urge to redesign the whole packaging/label of the product to a level of representation worthy to carry the rating and additionally compete alongside other contenders of Irish cream brands.

Design flaws are pretty visible in the use of stereotypical design, use of 4 font-faces, and multiple colors. The effect of multiple font-faces results in a non-apparent consistency and defined logo. Which also influences part of the project in creating a look that defines: Heritage, Culture, Region, and Practice/Custom of making Irish Cream.

Researching the Brand

In order to began I looked up as much info as I could find in order to learn more about the brand which was not very promising at first until I found the seller who sells O’ReillysTM Irish Cream. Luckily I found enough to help

assess everything about where it comes from in Ireland.

What I did find was that it originates from an Irish region known popularly as the Golden Vale (Irish: Machaire méith na Mumhan) an area of rolling

pastureland in the civil province of Munster, southwestern Ireland. Covering parts of three counties, Limerick, Tipperary and Cork, it is the best land in Ireland for dairy farming. Additionally, learned O’ReillysTM Irish Cream comes specifically from the town of Tipperary.

Concept Exploration

Redesigning the logo for this brand was I believe a necessity, as it was not clearly defined on the original package.

At first, I looked at Irish-based typefaces but deemed them stereotypical in approach as well as Celtic knot approaches that I tried exploring with but deemed them also the same as the typefaces. Therefore, I to in consideration the keywords I came up with to direct me towards a different avenue that played on the heritage and tradition of the Irish region known as the “Golden Vale” in regards to making Irish Cream Liquors.I eventually decided upon the ideas with checkmarks to explore even further.

Defining a crest is in Europe a still thriving tradition and a defining feature of villages, cities, counties and states/provinces through out Northern Europe and as far south as France.

I wanted to design a feature into the logo and name that would help carry the keywords that I wanted to help define the brand and its local history and traditions. Additionally, give it something that would set it apart from the other known brands of Irish cream makers.

Defining the Crest

[Diagonal lines represent the valleys, hedgerows, and rolling hills typical of the “Golden Vale” of Ireland’s Tipperary.

Arrows represents the ruralness of the region and ode to heritage of Irish hunting.

Leaf pays homage to Celtic lore and connects to the presence of Oak and Ash trees predominately in the region.

Antlers represent that of elk, which is prominate throughout Ireland, and its rich history of heraldry use.

The reason behind this style of logo was to help portray and invoke the age-old tradition of making Irish Cream from this region. The gold color pays homage to the nickname of the region and white for modernity in today’s world. The use of a serif font is to help emphasize all these traits in the overall design.

Deciding on a Form

At this point I was deciding how to effectly package the product both visually in the sense of being unique. Therefore by being unique, how could I design a use for efficiency in the store setting? How would I design a form that could be played with to make display towers and put more products on the shelf where others would be limited?

It was decided a triangular base would achieve this ability.
