DESCRIPTION

I designed this chair as an assignment for my Furniture and Fittings class during my college. I named it Poppy Chair because a poppy flower was my inspiration. The chair does not exist but I wish it would. Maybe one day someone will discover it...

Egg chair (1950s-lounched in1960) –

Arne Jacobsen (1902-1971)Materials/Manufacturing:

The shell is made of polyurethane foam with fibre glass reinforcement .

Base - injection-moulded aluminium, hand-stitched upholstery - fabrics by Danish textile

king Kvadrat or Happy (left) and Prince (right) 504 fabrics by Tord Boontje. It also

comes in leather. It takes several days and 1,300 stitches to make one chair.

Barcelona chair (1929) –

Ludwig Mies van der RoheMaterials/Manufacturing:

The frame is formed from strips of steel, which are shaped, welded and ground by hand

before being polished and chromed. It takes one person two days to sew the cushions

using 126 individual pieces of leather, taken from a complete hide. The cutter

determines the overall look of the cushions, as each piece of leather is a different shape

and size and varies in colour. It is available to buy in 841 standard leather colour options.

Panton Chair (1960s) –

Verner PantonMaterials/Manufacturing:

The solid plastic chair (reinforced polypropylene) is made using a process known as

injection moulding. The shell is UV and weatherproof, making it suitable for both

indoor and outdoor use, and it contains additives to prevent the brilliant colours from

fading. The Panton Chair comes in five different standard colours: black, blue, red,

white and yellow. But every year Vitra releases a limited-edition colour.

the shape of the origami swan.

Riddled Cabinet by Stephen

The Cabinet is a laser cut Canaletto

walnut and aluminium with vegetal

oil finish. The five cabinets are

inscribed in an orthogonal frame

defining the limits of the piece as

furniture and densely perforated

with five unique porous patterns.

Shadow Chair by Duffy

London

The chair integrates shadow into its

structure, at first glance it is a simple

wooden chair that seems to defy

gravity by standing upright while

only having two front legs, but on

closer inspection the shadow is part

of the chair and made from steel,

which is attached to a metal frame

built inside the chair. Available in

walnut and white birch.

Villain Chair by Suck UK

The Villain chair rests on a base

of chrome, steel, and aluminium,

and is covered in plush squares

upholstered in leather.

Plan: chair design for a new flagship store

which will open in the near future for a

fashion designer, Amy Lynam. She

described her collection Anthem as dark,

urban, strong, conceptual and cosmopolitan

and my aim was to design

a chair with similar or the same qualities.

Idea: transformation of a poppy flower into a chair to create a feeling of outdoors and to bring Amy Lynam’s accent colours, black and

red into the urban appearance of the flagship store. These colours also emphasize the New York style (famous red brick, black fire

staircases) that my client is looking for. Straightening the edges of the flower produced a shape that blends with the Anthem clothing

style and with the interior of the store.

adding accessories

(decorative light

Materials and Manufacturing

Base of the Poppy Chair will be made of

injection-moulded (1*) Polypropylene (PP)

because of properties and aesthetics that

I want to achieve in my design.

Weight: Polypropylene is a light weight material

and the chair should not be very heavy.

Tensile strength: Its tensile strength is high. It

shows strong resistance towards stress and

cracking. It means the chair will easily carry

ballast and will not break.

Moisture Absorption: Polypropylene does not

get affected by moisture as its moisture

absorption is very low. It will not get stained very

easily.

Corrosion: Polypropylene also remains

unaffected by chemicals.

PP can be readily compounded or coloured in

the melt phase and formulated for specific

performances (extra stiffness, antistatic to

improve dusting and resistance to UV for

outdoor uses. It can be produced in variety of

colours but also in a high gloss finish – one of

the main reasons of my choice.

Accessories.

Pillow for the chair will be respectively shaped

and made of black leather with gloss finish.

Leather is also widely used in Amy Lynam’s

collections. It fits perfectly to the New York style

interior but most importantly it will perform slip

resistance while in contact with high gloss

finished plastic surface.

Accent lanterns (poppy buds) will be made of

black wrought iron and screwed to the chair

under the seat.

1* Injection moulding – manufacturing process

where material is fed into a heated barrel, mixed, and

forced into a mould cavity where it cools and hardens

to the configuration of the mould cavity.

Flower of the 21st century,

Poppy lounge chair is made of recyclable

injection moulded red Polypropylene with

gloss finish and fixed foam filled seat

cushion upholstered in high quality black

leather. Two lanterns made of wrought iron

emphasize interesting shape of the chair

and gloss finish reflects their light.

Chair is strong, durable, antistatic,

moisture and stain resistant (for leather

maintenance read manufacturer

instructions). It can be used both indoor

and outdoor with a change of a cushion

material, electrical equipment is watertight

and also easy to uninstall if needed.

It comes in a wide range of colours so why

not personalize you own chair?
