Site Background 

Pu'er is located in southern Yunnan.  Pu’er is known for its tea production and culture. Pu’er is an important tea‐processing and trading center in the province. It is also a collection and distribution hub for local fruits and timber products.

Site Background 

Ning'er County is an autonomous county under the jurisdiction of Pu'er Prefecture in Yunnan Province, China. The population of the county has a large proportion of native Hani and Yi people in a predominately Han Chinese population.

Objectives

• Find design solutions that celebrated Ning’er’s vernacular tradition, yet modern enough to appeal to a wider global audience

• Investigate the effectiveness and limitations of an integrated‐design approach between interior design, urban planning, and landscape architecture students, and to observe how different discipline‐specific pedagogical models affected team dynamics.

Vernacular Tradition of a typical farmer’s home using hand crafted local materials.  The wooden beams and mud bricks are based on local construction techniques.
