In urban terms, the solution to this exercise is to create anintervention that strengthens the qualities of pre-existingspaces -built and non built-, and to responds to its need ofspatial integration with the immediate context.

This need of spatial integration, allows us to consider aboutthe different possibilities of intervention in the site: keepingeither both or one of the existing buildings. However, ifkeeping both buildings, the actual physical-spatial conditionsdifficults the possibility of design an urban-architecturalintervention which improves, in qualitative terms, the existingspace.

Therefore, this project proposes to maintain the patrimonialbuilding, as physical evidence of the past, and "to merge it"with a new one, by creating just one building that be able tointegrate to the site, to its conditions as well as to the city.

The functional distribution of this proposal is characterized by anappropriate organization and by a division of "served space" and"servant space".

Servant space, works with a logic packaging on all floors of thebuilding, without interrupt, obstruct or invade other spaces.

An enveloping structural steel facade, which evokes the skylineverticality of Paseo Sarasate´s facades, appropriates theintentionally geometry of both volumes to become the elementwhich diffuses the bounderline between the present and the past.

The served space organizes the program in differen areas: public,semi-public and private. The public area is characterized in havingmassive used areas: cafe, giftshop, ticket-resale, restaurant, etc.This areas are located on the ground and top floor, in order to high-enhance the public use throughout the building and make thespace: dynamic, inclusive and complementary of its urban context.

In architectural terms the challenge of the project is to achieve anoptimal merge between both buildings: the old one and the newone.

One of the most important conditions for design has been to get abalanced between both buildings, blurring the "line" which dividesthem, and combining the spatial distribution.

The open, wide and light new building´s spaces, will balance withthe enclosed, narrow and massive Bank of Spain´s spaces;complementing it.
