Sourcers are sexy and here is why.
I nd sourcers sexy. In the past months, especially a7er
a8ending Sourcing Summit Europe*, Ive been trying to gure out why I
nd sourcers to be so much more sexy than the average recruiter..
*Best recruitment event ever organised by @PhillipTusing
Robert Tornabe, a plasGc surgeon, once wrote in a blog post: It
is my conten-on that certain nega-ve characteris-cs of one's
personality can actually make that person less a9rac-ve and less
physically appealing.
I am not a genius, but I think this also means that certain
posiGve characterisGcs can make a person more a8racGve and more
physically appealing.
So, what are those characterisGcs of sourcers that I
(apparently) like so much?
1. Sourcers share. They share: Knowledge Network Tips Tools
Tricks Hacks. They truly believe that by sharing they will gain
more than by keeping everything for themselves.
2. Sourcers are thorough. If you hear @TheBalazs talking about
what you should know before you start recruiGng, youll know what I
mean. 99% of the recruiters I know, dont know in-country specics,
dont do cost of living comparisons or use social plaWorms that are
used locally (because everybody is on LinkedIn, right?!).
3. Sourcers are nerds. If you didnt know yet nerd is the new
sexy. And if you havent seen the hacks sourcers use to get more
data they can use to nd the best candidate and what kind of boolean
strings they build someGmes to get proles that really match the job
yet - youll be amazed when you do.
4. Sourcers really add value. Because they know the market they
can really help businesses get the best talent available to get
maximum business impact. Thats a li8le dierent from lling jobs
isntt it?
5. Sourcers are charming. They know how to engage and move
people: If you hear @jimstroud talking about how much eort he puts
in geang to know a candidate or @socialtalent about how he nds out
what is the right message, when is the right Gme and what is the
right channel youll nd out these people are real charmers.* *They
are the type of men you dont really noGce in a bar unGl they leave
with the nicest lady..
6. Sourcers are creaGve. @AndreMploy from SpoGfy for example
builds playlists to approach candidates with..
7. Sourcers are passionate. They really want to deliver, they
actually really enjoy what they are doing. Energy you get from
listening to people like @braingain is very dierent from the energy
you get from talking with average people in recruitment.
Great news: Sourcers are here to stay Due to globalizaGon and
increasing mismatch between supply and demand of skills, there is
and will be a lot of work in the future for sourcers. A lot of
things in the recruiGng process like adverGsing and assessing
(interviews suck) can be done by technology now, but nding people
and especially knowing how to move them from not knowing about a
job and a company to being enthusiasGc and willing to talk about
that job and with that company is something we sGll need humans for
- and will for a very long Gme.
Next event Phillip has promised me he will organise another
event in Amsterdam in September 2014. Be there! In the next post
Ill show some of the Gps, tools and tricks the speakers at Sourcing
Summit Europe shared that will get you ahead. Next blog
