Presenter Introduction• Brought group of Long term unemployed to meet with Secretary of Labor Perez in January 2014, which resulted in a line in

Presidents 2016 budget for relive of 401k penalties for LTU

• Attended the White House meeting with CEO's to pledge help to Long-term Unemployed at the White House in January 2014.

• Presenter at the MIT mini conference on long term unemployment in May 2014.

• Participated in USDOL commissioned study of 17 Job Clubs nationwide research presented in May 2014.

• Participated in White House brain storming session on Long Term Unemployed

• Ready To Work Grant $10 million, Four year awarded to NJCC Consortium for Workforce & Economic Development. Only 23 competitive federal grants over 133 national organizations made proposals. State of NJ DOL also awarded $2 million to help Long Term Unemployed in October 2014.

• Invited to meet with Secretary Perez in October 2014 with a team from New Jersey that wrote proposal that won a $10 million dollar Ready To Work Federal Grant.

• Guest Speaker at Princeton University Freshman Seminar Class taught by Allan B. Krueger in September 2014.

• International expansion of Neighbors-helping-Neighbors with NhN Madrid Spain in partnership with 1 Kilo De Ayuda Foundation at the Universidad Francisco De Vitoria November 2014. 50% of first cohort group landed jobs after 10 weeks of NhN agenda led meetings.

• Adjunct Professor at Petrocelli College of Continuing Studies at Fairleigh Dickinson University, he is teaching master level business and human resource classes in the Puerto al Futuro Program and classes in the Yeshiva Program.

• Nationally recognized subject matter expert in this area John is continuously sought after for input by the media and labor officials for articles and coverage and policy input about the unemployment and jobs situation. See

• Hidden Job Market • There are projections that up to 70-80% of jobs are “Hidden”• Never make the job boards or online or on company web sites • To get access to these you need to become an expert networker• Use LinkedIn extensively and work to get information interviews • Meet company employees on your company target lists• Current Employees of a company make candidate referrals too

Employee Referral Bonus Programs

• Many companies offer Employee referral bonus programs • Some companies pay large bonuses base on industry• You need to be sponsored by an employee before you submit resume• Companies are using employees more frequently to recruit for jobs• They can champion you inside their organization• Reach them through networking and using LinkedIn

How to be a Smart Networker

• Have a clear defined goal.• Think about what type of job you would like help finding• More focused/specific you are, the easier it is for others to help you • Broad statements such as “I’ll take anything,” isn’t very helpful.• A statement like, “I’m looking for a position as an administrative

assistant in a school,” is more effective• Set a goal to find 5 new contacts each week. • Add contacts as a daily routine in LinkedIn as you meet them.

• Attend local networking events• Join a local job search support group or job club• Focus on contacting and networking your target list of companies• Couple events a week is enough• Spend your time during day to be networking to employers• Be prepared to work the networking event• Attend chamber, industry events• Give out your networking card and get cards for follow up
