DESCRIPTION

The "Road to Registration" presentation was a 'catch all' presentation to explain the process of how one becomes an architect. We tailored the program to meet the needs of high school students, students of architecture, Interns, Architectural Registration Exam candidates, Immigrant architects, and licensed architects who could serve as mentors for anyone, anywhere in the process. My part was to describe IDP and the process to become enrolled. At the time, that was where I was in the process. We gave the program to architecture firms throughout Houston, at AIA Houston meetings for CEUs, at Texas Society of Architects Conferences, other AIA chapters in Texas and Louisiana, and Texas architecture schools.

IDP GOALS

• Define areas of architectural practice in which interns should acquire basic knowledge and skills.

• Encourage additional training in the broad aspects of architectural practice.

• Inform and advise about educational internship and professional issues and opportunities.

• Provide a uniform system for documentation and periodic assessment of internship activity.

• Provide access to educational opportunities designed to enrich training.

Page 3: My part of AIA Houston's "Road to Registration" presentation

Two types of activities that develop core competencies are identified for each IDP training area:

• Awareness and Understanding • The Architect's Handbook of Professional Practice

(AHPP)

• The Construction Specifications Institute Manual of Practice (CSI).

• Skills and Applications

Professional and community service is any voluntary participation, while employed in an acceptable training setting, in a broad range of professional and community activities to develop and enhance your understanding of the people and forces that shape society and your professional knowledge and skills. Community service is not limited to architecturally related activities.

At the completion of your internship, you should be able to responsibly volunteer in a traditional or nontraditional community-based organization to help enhance the quality of life.
