How to trick people into thinking you’re not a Graduate Student

1. Be Visible
This means get out of the lab and get involved. There are many opportunities and more to come.
2. Have a strong introduction
Do you know how to shake hands? How to introduce yourself and others?
3. Ask a lot of questions
Do you know the Dean? Ask to meet with him. Do you know about our core facilities? Ask.This builds your network!
4. Meet a lot of humans
Networking is invaluable. Make time for it! If you are an introvert schedule time for this.
5. Favors. . . .
Show people that you are accountable. This starts on Day 1. Accountability is a key to career success and building a NETWORK!
6. Be strategic
Schedule meetings/time to plan your career. Choose activities with you CV in mind. Your goal should be at least two C.V. lines per year.
7. Be Organized and Plan

8. Be a High Performer not a Workaholic
Know your value don’t let others determine itGive 100% at right time not 110% all the timeTake initiative don’t be reactiveDo business don’t be busy
9. Professional Dress
Lab=Jeans and Professional Shirt; Presentation=business attire (get some!)Out on the weekend=expect to run into a potential employer; think twice before you wear PJs
10. Take Care of Yourself
This is the foundation to achieving your goals. Have a support system and cultivate it throughout your career.
