How To Get The Good Jobs
When advertising a job, the employer will usually have skills, qualifications orproof of performance that they want to see in the successful candidate.
This might include, for example, a relevant college degree, or certificates ofother forms of training that are related to the job.
It also might include skills or achievements related to KPIs (Key PerformanceIndicators).
These are things that you can quantify or measure – such as the ability to do acertain amount of work or achieve certain results in a certain amount of time.
These are called the “hard” skills – the measurable, quantifiable proof of coretraining, competency and effectiveness.
But then there are “soft” skills, and these are often essential too.
Here’s why.

If a company has a lot of staff, or a lot of contact with the public, then theability to co-operate effectively with other people is usually essential.

Some good jobs do not require much contact with other people, like a lot of industrialor engineering jobs, or security watchmen jobs and so on.
But most companies will want their employees to have a minimum level of inter-personal “soft” skills – not only because it makes life easier for everyone in the office,but it helps prevent lawsuits, stress claims, and resignations among staff.
The problem is that “soft” skills are difficult to make sound credible in a CV.
Employers want you to have these skills, but first they want to know you havethe core skills and competencies of the job.

Employers will ask questions based around how you have previously dealt withdifficult people, how you have worked in a team and what your role in the team was.
These types of questions are usually designed to establish how well you work withother people.
There’s a classic book by Dale Carnegie called How To Win Friends and InfluencePeople. There is a reason why it is a classic. Because this stuff is relevant,timeless and important.
