We are hiring…

Line, Prep Cook Baker

Dishwasher Go big or go home. You

obviously favor the first choice. And that's why you love

expressing yourself differently to the world. And that's what our guests love too. You won't find any pieces of flare or fake

smiles at Culinary Dropout. We're real. We write our own

rules. We are not one of many. We are Dropouts.

TIPSTER: OK Campers, you can tell that even though they are a part of the Fox Chain, they are still proud puppies and they have an attitude. Better understand this you will hear that old phrase of rejection “Thank you very much…we will let ya know!” This is stickily a pro application here with maybe the dishwasher – as you can piece together attitude and availability to win them over. As they are a special breed, you might want to do your Prep 101 and make sure you go prepared by knowing what makes them so proud. Like they say, “Go big or go home!”

DOWNLOAD THEIR APPLICATION AND LIKE MAKE IT SHINE BUT, USE ONET ONLINE TO SPRINKLE IN THOSE SOFTSKILLS THEY ARE REALLY LOOKING FOR AND YOU NEVER REMEMBER TO ADD… http://www.foxrc.com/frcwp/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/FRC-Application-revised-July-2015-Fillable.pdf

HIRING PRO COOKS They are wanting about a year’s worth of cooking and it wouldn’t hurt to go through the menu and match that up with your own skill set. It wouldn’t hurt to pull up the consumer reviews on www.yelp.com to get additional talking points (good or bad…bad works well if you know how to spin them – when you are asked to tell them about yourself…bad costumer service reviews means that I go out of my way to talk up my strong commitment to customer service and have a great, motivation story or two to share…get it?) For cook positions please fill an application at Canyon Cafe between 2:00 pm and 4:00pm every day. YOUR PREP STARTS HERE: http://www.canyoncafe.com/about

Email resume to Olivia: [email protected] Note: For this kind of money…you can afford to smile…You will need to upsell your people (soft) skills…Go to ONET to find them…

Page 7: Copper blues rock pu1

WHAT ARE SOFT SKILLS BUBA??? Soft skills are basically your people skills, how well you play with others and how well you can defuse difficult situations. Well, there is more to it than not but it won’t be on the test (interview)…trust me…SEE! I got good soft skills… The reality is that most employers (at the entry level or above) are very concerned (obsessed) with these skills. Next to availability, it is the critical factor to you getting hired into almost any modern job. Well…that is all nice but where do I go to educate myself about soft skills? Glad you asked! ONET Online is a great place to start as they break these down for you based upon your actual job title. ONET makes a good read to help you discover who you are and what you can do. Test me and pull up the job description for cook, read it completely and then look me in my one good eye and tell me that you knew all that and then lie that you had it in your killer resume.

NOTE: Many things that you thought were unimportant or worse, “That’s what I do!” attitude that everyone knows what I do by giving you a job site – which is usually not true. See the disconnect? In an employment world where soft skills and related are critical to

getting hired, you need to assume that people do not know what you do for a living and you need to connect the dots for them because they can’t or won’t. Hey! It’s on you Bubba! Explain what you do like you were explaining it to a six-year-old. Get it??? N. Central Avenue Phoenix, AZ 85004 “Right down the Street”

Page 12: Copper blues rock pu1

Note: This is a tough one! There is no getting a bellhop to show you to housekeeping to introduce yourself and bypass the hassle and roadblocks of stepping foot in the HR Office. Everything MUST be done in the application and if you don’t understand the correct process, then Bubba, you are toast before you started.

The key lies in understanding that they may not require little or no experience but that doesn’t mean that they are not looking for specific skills. With that as a road map, you are already lost. But, wait; don’t walk away because you don’t have a cousin working there to put the fix in for you. The fix is simple if you are really interested in this job. The fix starts with the fact that 80% of the applications are gonna get tossed because the applicants didn’t understand that experience and skills/abilities are very different animals. They will misunderstand this fact and will cut-N-past their verbiage from their killer resume with all the duties and skills that do not apply to these jobs. Knowing this, you just beat 80% of those fools and you only need to beat the few who just stumbled into it by luck. Those who already knew the process and have a few applications under their belts will be impossible to beat. Since you are new to this process the best you can hope is that they don’t apply or that you can put in the extra work to beat them if they got lazy. Anyway, you will want to bypass the employer’s job description (even though it is long – it has to do with selling the hotel not giving you the Intel you need to apply successfully) and go directly to ONET Online and type in the job title. There you will find a 5-6 page job description created by the nation’s greatest employment gurus (the Department of Labor). Here are the hard skills to put into the application but (remember they are not real picky about this as this is not where they will make the hiring decision from) focus more on the soft skills (people skills for lack of a better word) and sprinkle them throughout each job description (what space will allow).

Page 13: Copper blues rock pu1

Here is where you really pull ahead: After reading through the ONET description, you will see what skills are required. Now think about each of your jobs and think “Did I ever do that?” Remember they are NOT asking you if the skills they need were your PRIMARY DUTIES – they are asking have you ever done any of the things that they asked about. The correct answer is usually “yes.” Look at the soft skills and you have done almost every one of them (dealing with other people – remember?) This is your key. Talk only about the things you did that they are interested in and leave the rest for a longer story after they hire you. By doing this, you have an inside track to getting yourself selected for an interview. ==================================================================

THE SECRET TO GOING TO WORK FAST:

Being realistic in your job search Why do job searches fail? Why do they take so long? The reason is not the urban legend about this being a bad economy. That might have been true several years ago when 300 other job seekers were foot racing you from one advertise job to another. Those days are fading like ice cream on a summer day here in the Phoenix Metro Area. In case no one told you, we are in a job boom. REALLY!!! According to ASU’s Business College, we now have 2.1 percent unemployment in professional occupations and recruiters are being sent out across the country to locate these rare job seekers. That’s nice but, most people reading this are not going to be going to work as a design engineer, rocket scientist, CFO, CEO or any of the other related positions. Why did we mention this then? When you hear such news, your ears perk up and

Page 29: Copper blues rock pu1

you totally can see yourself in a corner office with a view, smoking on a big cigar and talking trash to your secretary. This is when, you start to hear job counselors picking up on this and they start talking about supersizing your job search and they agree that they like totally can also see you setting behind a big corporate desk and you must like totally go for

the corporate gig no matter what! They tell you and your ego supports that fact that you deserve a $15/Hour job even in a labor market where we have college educated workers standing in line for $12/hour jobs. You have just entered the “UNREALISTIC JOB SEARCH ZONE.” There is no doubt that the President is right that no one working full-time should live in poverty. That isn’t the problem especially here at the UJS as we are very progressive in promoting “living wage” but, we also understand the harsh realities of the Phoenix (Entry level) Job Market where there are very few $15/Hr. non-sales jobs that do not come with a very long laundry list of skills,

abilities and/or require a ton of experience. We understand that Arizona is by purpose and design the Patron Saint of the minimum wage job due to the lack of employee labor laws and unions. We understand that this is a bottom-line labor market where the workers are without rights and where there is no labor law that forces an employer to pay you…if they don’t then you are reduced to taking them to small claims court to get your money. In this market, there are high-end jobs for corporate executives, sales reps and highly specialized technology techs or HVAC certified specialists with transportation. But for the most part, $15/Hr. is not a starting point but where you end up after many long years of hard, dedicated slave labor as an office, cubical zombie. Your job counselor doesn’t make $15/Hr. so how can they teach you how to start at $15/Hr. they can’t or else they would be. It is very simple … Right? If you aren’t making $15/Hr. who are you to teach me how? Are they happy? Are they Free? If not, why listen to them?

Page 30: Copper blues rock pu1

REALISTIC JOB SEARCHING The other day I ran into a young kid who had only returned to the job market after a long and extended stay in the wilderness of total, utter unemployment. He starts the conversation with “I would rather not get a job if I can’t get a quality job…” Out of curiosity and a sense that this kid needed help, I continued to ask “what do you mean?” He looked at me like I was a Martian and explained that he needed a minimum of $40K year to consider it. The first question that I wanted to ask was “Have you ever earned $40K?” But, I know that he hadn’t and I tried to persuade him by saying “Wouldn’t $9-11/Hr. be better than zero dollars?” He answered “NO!” and walked away… Several times a week, we deal with the end result of the good intensions of some job counselor who totally convinced some poor entry

Page 31: Copper blues rock pu1

level job seeker that if the job doesn’t pay $15/Hr., it is a junk job and if they get anything less than $15/Hr. then they are a failure too. They will walk away angry that you weren’t has nice and supportive as the other job counselor who planted the demon seed of “If it at isn’t $15/Hr. it is junk…junk…hear me well!” They came in without a job, they will leave without a job and their time searching will

be frustrating, time consuming and unsuccessful. It is true that we all desire to be a famous Hollywood movie producer, Bill Gates’ replacement or (maybe even) Donald Trump (well without the comb-over hairdo that is) but, reality is that we were not fated to be and the same for a person who may be entering the labor market for the first time in a long time or has little training or formal education that most $15/Hr. jobs require. This does not mean that you cannot grow into these jobs by working hard, educating yourself, putting in the time, effort and realizing what your grandparents understood; that you cannot start at the top (unless your parents own the company) and will have to devote all your efforts into successfully moving up to your goal.

A UJS REMINDER… Availability will get you or lose you an entry level job and the secret here is stay local…the job seeking mantra here is “if I need to worry if I can get home then, the job is too far away” and if you ignore this wisdom, you will fail because you will not be able to get there early enough to keep your job. THREE YEARS WE HAVE BEEN YOU BFF ON GETTING AN ENTRY LEVEL JOB We have spent almost three years trying to education entry and re-entry job seekers on better and smarter ways to go to work quickly. We have shared freely that the old ways of job seeking where gonna cost them more chances to go to work than they would get them. We had more than a good share of success over the past year with many readers being able to use our tips, suggestions and insider INTEL to return to a normal life that started with them going to work sooner than they would have without The Used Job Shack (their words…not ours).

THE HOME COMPANION SHOPING GUIDE TO WORKING IN THE CLEANING INDUSTRY There are a few big dogs in this market, some mutts and quite a few puppies. Many large companies run their own cleaning crews (like the hotels/motels/resorts) while others hire smaller companies to do the work for them.

• If you are interested in working for a large company doing janitorial or maintenance work, see if they are running help wanted ads.

• If they are running ads then all you need is “RULE NUMBER FOUR” to help you assemble an application that will get you past the computer gate keeper and into an interview.

• If they aren’t or don’t run ads then that means that they contract the work out to a smaller company.

• If they contract the work out, it is easy to find out who that company is by calling the business office and asking them just that (now you know who to contact).

• If the company is small, don’t waste time sending your killer resume out to every cleaning company this side of the Mississippi, they won’t (for the most part) even read it any more than you read the junk mail that you get in the mail. The key here is to go local and to go “OLD SCHOOL..”

This means that you need to go to www.yellowpages.com to generate a list of all the cleaning companies within 5-10 miles of where you live or want to live. Use this list to research each company to find out who they are and how do they hire. Most times, the easiest, directress and the simplest solution is to spruce yourself up to look like you are on your way to work, do your homework so that you can have an intelligent conversation about their business (or industry), put on your walking shoes and go out and start knocking on doors.

Page 34: Copper blues rock pu1

This is very effective because most of these small companies don’t have the money nor the time to run an ad except as a desperate, last measure. Here Old Lady Luck can and will be your friend. You may will find yourself at the right place, at the right time, saying the right thing to the right person and get the job. Couldn’t hurt could it? The key concept here is to get yourself out and in front of as many people (face-to-face) as you can within this industry or who are somewhere in the food chain of making a hiring decision.

No one has ever been hired by resume or application alone. The resume/application is a prop to get attention that you hope will lead to an interview. Why not cut out the middle steps and go out and get yourself in direct contact with a person who can hire you? Cut out all of the middle men (people) and the great thing with these small cleaning companies is that you can do just that – if you try.

So welcome to our first attempt to help you out and we thought that we would assist you at the other end of the industry by assembling a sundry collection of ads from the larger companies. =============================================================================

STILL HIRING…STILL HAVE 100’S OF OPENINGS…STILL A CHANCE! With more than 300+ offices located throughout the country, a job as a janitor,

TIPSTER: SPOILER ALERT! Campers! Apply ONLY online and you may be as old as Uncle Bob before they call you in for an interview? Like HMSHOST, they receive so many applications because they are a national (and one of the largest) facilities management company. RULE # 4 is critical here to a point but, there is still an extra step that you must do to actually get an interview. You must attend one of their occasional job fairs or (better yet and they tell you to do this very thing!) GO INTO ONE OF THEIR LOCAL OFFICES and introduce yourself.

REMEMBER THE CONCEPT OF MAKING YOURSELF A SERIOUS CANDIDATE? Remember how HMSHOST tells you to apply online but NEVER pulls applications until after you have tracked down their HR Office and impress them with your “A” Game and show them that you are ready to go to work – only then, do they pull your applicant off their computer. Remember why? Because till you did that, you were not a serious candidate in their mind and if you are not serious then they do not need to waste their time with you…they have far too many people applying to care. OK, campers! Ditto here! Till you show up and their office totally serious and prepared they more than likely not call you. Rule #4 helps and when they do pull your application, it will be a deal maker because your application will be what they are looking for – if you did Rule #4 correctly. ========================================================== APPLY ONLINE THEN, SPRUCE UP YOUR “A” GAME AND MAKE A BEE-LINE TO THE NEAREST ABM OFFICE! THERE ARE 7 OFFICES IN YOUR AREA. A. Sky Harbor International Airport Terminal 4, Level 1, Door 7, Phoenix, AZ 85034 B. 642B N. 17th Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85007 C. 2632 W Medtronic Way, Tempe, AZ 85281 (MAIN OFFICE) D. 2320 E. Jones Rd. Central Ave. Ste. 1750, Phoenix, AZ 85012 G. 3602 E Southern Ave 1 & 2, Phoenix, AZ 85040 Many of their jobs pay very well and they always have a large number of openings. Your background MAY be an issue as many of their locations are in schools, government offices, businesses or large factories. Their job description(s) are fairly good at telling you if you should apply or not. The concept is that if they do not say anything, apply and roll the dice…

Page 36: Copper blues rock pu1

DO NOT ASSUME YOU KNOW…If you go over there with you “A” Game and you have done your job correctly in frontloading the conversation with your skills (THAT MATCHES WHAT THEY ARE LOOKING FOR) and got them wanting you… Betcha you will not need 100% to pass their check…maybe, you can slide in with a 69% or they will try to find something for you?
