Connecting with co-workers requires a pragmatic approach that shows people you care.

So many people are unsuccessful in building genuine co-worker relationships due to a lack of meaningful connection

with people.

1. Don't do 'Silly Socialisation‘

'Silly Socialisation' is when people say foolish, mindless or unintelligent things. How many times have you listened to conversations and thought - 'why is he/she saying such a dumb thing?' Silly Socialisation is the quickest way to lose a person's attention. Be mindful of your conversations.

2. Show Mutual Respect Honour differences. Show your co-workers you understand their point of view even if you don’t agree with them. Be respectful when you explain your differences and stand your ground with a humble, but assertive manner.

3. Acknowledge Reality As humans we are always over optimistic and don’t like difficult conversations. Be realistic about situations at work and accept that difficult conversations are part of life. See things for what they are and discuss them ‘head on’ with mindful conversations.

4. Ban Gossip As humans we have a dark side to gossip about things that we can’t solve in public. Ban being a gossiper. A good way to think about private conversations is: ‘Can I comfortably repeat my private conversations in public if I’m forced to?’ If you want to break co-worker trust and respect instantaneously, become a gossiper.

5. Praise in Public, Criticise in Private Everybody does something well. Find those things that your co-workers do well and share a few genuine words of public praise. If you have to give constructive feedback (positive criticism), give it in private.

6. Reliable Consistency Treat everybody the same. Being inconsistent with people leaves co-workers with a feeling that you are playing games. Even if you have had the worst outfall with somebody, treat them equally in public. People will respect you for being mature and rising above the situation.

7. Reason before Emotion Don’t react emotionally to difficult situations. Take a deep breath, think about it with your head, see things in perspective and then think about the best way to articulate yourself. Being calm and mindful in the most difficult of situations goes a long way in people feeling safe in your presence. Showing considered thought builds respect and creates an environment where things can be solved.

8. Meaningful Future Every co-worker interaction has the potential to lead to greater relationships, even if your personalities are worlds apart. People care about your situation after you first show care about them. Interact with people with genuineness and show interest. Let them feel important in your conversations and through your behaviour let them see you want to build a meaningful work relationship.
