HISTORICAL CONTEXT

Impressionism was "the begining of an awareness of the social upheavals caused by the Industrial Revolution"

Thanks to the Mechanical production of color, which included mechanical grinding, oil binders and additives that helped to keep the paint homogeneus inside their containers, the term "paint alla prima" was born.

This term meant that the painting was done in one sitting, which is the way impressionist paintings were made.

SOCIAL CONTEXT

Monet painted a nude woman in a contemporary setting and it was frowned upon by the academie des Beaux Arts of Paris and thus, giving birth to the salon for rejected art. This salon started as a place for people to go and mock the rejected art, but later on it became even more popular than the main salon, as a result Monet, along with other artists such as Renoir, Pisarro and Sisley, created the " Cooperative and Anonymous Association of Painters, Sculptors and Engravers" and they displayed there their artwork independantly

They didn't make much money this way, but they slowly became popular and got the acceptance of the public.
