10 Mistakes in Career plan

Career plan is one step ahead in deciding or planning the type of career and field of

education. Career planning should be made with at most care and guidance.

In career planning these choices you make and the attitudes you adopt will affect your

life for years to come. So, be sure to take the long view in considering career choices, and

avoid mistakes that can put pressure on you.

Let’s discuss about the common mistakes while planning the career, because once we

identify them we can overcome our ignorance and mistakes.

1. Under estimation of oneself:

Self confidence is the major strength one should possess in every

aspect of life and career. Staying back with no hopes and confidence is the

very first mistake a student makes in career planning.

2. Money based career planning:

This is another career planning mistake which most of the students

tend to

attempt.Career planning should be based on the field of interest and not on

the money that can be made by choosing it. If you dwell too much on how

much money you could earn in a given occupation, you may come up short in

other areas of job satisfaction.

3. Making decision on parent’s choice:

Not making a self decision is another big mistake which most of the

students make; i.e., choosing a career based on your parent’s choice may one

day turn to be a biggest injustice you have made in your career. Parent’s

guidance is necessary but final decision making should be an individual

choice.

4. Deciding jobs on experience basis:

This is another common mistake which students make. Experience

gained by small jobs is also valuable. So, avoid considering jobs for

experience on long range goals.

5. Not having a long-term career plan:

One should not plan his/her career on a short sight approach. Never

choose a career that is been offered to you thinking that you can change it

anytime. Keep in mind that changing the field of career can become a problem

later.

6. Not having a current resume and suitable objective:

An updated resume, could fetch you the perfect job opportunity. Be

clear in your future perspectives and be prepared with a suitable objective to

describe your area of interests and work power of yourself.

7. Confusing one aspect of a job with the whole job:

Specialization in one particular field doesn’t mean that you are capable

for that particular job. You can work on a wide range of approach using your

specialized field. So, creativity also is important for planning a career.

8. Confusing what you're good at with what you like to do:

Choosing a job which you are good at with a job you like to do, may

be a difficult one. It is of course the most confusing decision making process

too. So, the best is to choose the job which you like to do, because it is where

you have more interest and you can improvise also.

9. Not maintaining work/life balance:

“You need to have balance in your life if you want to be more effective

at work”. For a happier life, a happy career is very much needed so, plan a

carrier according to your life style.

10. Not becoming updated:

Career planning should be always based on a future aspect of life.

Keeping updated in all ways for sustaining your job is in your hands.

Once you get outdated, then you may unfit for the job. So, keep in

mind to update yourself in all aspects.
