God

• The Europeans thought that it was their job to make every one believe in God.

• They were Catholics.• The Indians didn’t

understand who or what God was.

• When they first arrived the explorers recognized that the Indians didn’t know god by their lack of clothes.

Gold• Greed overtook the

explorers and they cheated the Indians out of their gold.

• Hernando Cortez captured the Aztec leader and threatened to kill him if they did not fill up a room with gold.

• Christopher Columbus and his crew used the Indians as slaves to find the gold for them and at the end of the day if they returned empty handed they had to suffer consequences such as loosing a limb or even a life.

Glory

• All of the explorers wanted to be recognized for finding The New World.

• Columbus adventured to America in hopes of achieving glory for finding the easiest route to India.

• The native Americans were named Indians by Columbus because he believed he had found India.

Spices

• The Portuguese traveled to India and found spices.

• They used spices to make spoiled and rotten food taste better.

• Spices were worth as much as gold back then. Even things as simple as black pepper.

North West Passage

• After Explorers found new land other explorers were jealous and started looking for the North West Passage.

• This was a strait through America to Asia which doesn’t actually exist.

Encomienda

• The encomienda was a law that allowed the European explorers to take the possessions of the Indians and make them their slaves.

• The explorers used this system to bend the law by taking everything the Indians owned.
