DESCRIPTION
I gave this presentation today at the Twin Cities UnSummit (http://unsummit.org). This year's UnSummit theme was "Hacking The Recession." And my presentation was focused on the changing role of trade associations and communities--how can they evolve to better benefit their communities in tough times, yet remain true to their missions. All of the images and videos are copyright to their respective owners (links embedded). Please respect the Creative Commons license for all assets in this presentation. Thank you.

An awesome metaphor for this point, courtesy of YouTube and Kuliman. Associations can bring together all kinds of individual talents to create something powerful and new (that wouldn’t happen otherwise).

If the economy really does suck, to the point that associations are losing lots of members, then isn’t it
time for a different approach?i.e. A commitment to volunteer X hours for the association
or a related charity = your annual membership
Less talk. More action. i.e. stewarding solutions
In addition to networking and education, couldn’t associations unite their members to take on local social
or charitable challenges? i.e. A team of individual experts within a trade association
could work together to solve a community problem, facilitated and endorsed by the association
