6. Expert Opinion

6.1 Expert – Phillipe Bekaert, Marketing and Communications Manager

for Engineered Products, Europe – Johns Manville

6.1.1 What are the Key Trends and Developments in the Composites

Industry?

The key trends I would say are a focus towards lightweight, is an important driver, this is especially

true in the automotive/transportation segment. There is also a driver towards lightweight in Wind

energy and also an importance on materials with higher durability and strength. There are a

number of composite materials competing in the market but those are the main drivers currently.

6.1.2 In the Past the Aerospace Industry was one of the Biggest

Composites Markets and More Recently the Energy Composites Market

has Been Performing Well. Would you say there are no Other Markets

That Will Drive the Composites Market Forward in the Future?

Aerospace is a very important industry for the carbon composites segment not as much for the

glass composites segment. There will be an increased focus towards carbon composites.

If you look at the automotive segment it’s more geared towards structural applications, for example

the BMW i3 being completely driven towards carbon composites, this is a prime example that

lightweight vehicles will play an important role in the market.

6.1.3 What Would you say are the Main Advantages of Glass Fibre Over

Carbon Fibre in the Wind Power Market? Is it Mainly a Cost Issue?
