1) Keep it simple, yet effective

Like with most things in life, over complicating something that usually has a simple solution leads to morecomplexities and headaches than when you started out, and the same applies with packaging. People that pick upand look at your product need to be able to tell what it is with ease. The brand, name of the product and picture needto be clearly visible so as to convey this. Keeping it simple works in your product's favor because it helps it tobecome more identifiable and the simplicity ends up speaking for itself!

2) Command attention

Now I know that I said keeping it simple is a sure way to make your product stand out, but it is definitely worth a shotexperimenting with some colour. Making use of colours that resonate with your brand in your packaging (think ofcompanies like Coke a Cola or Apple) helps to bring a range of products under one banner and increases brandawareness significantly. This will not only make your product even more noticeable as customers will associate acertain colour with your brand, but it will make it difficult for your competitors to use 'your colour' in any of their futurepromotions.

3) Stick with the trends

With the rapid speed at which things change and develop in our world, it is unrealistic to think that your packagingwill stay relevant throughout the ages. That is why it is important to periodically access whether your packagingdesign is up to scratch or if you need to go back to the drawing board. Consumers' tastes are constantly changingand your packaging needs to reflect those changes. Experiment with new design concepts or Eco-friendly materials, don't get stuck in the past, stick with the current trends!

4) Short and legible

Nobody wants to read a long-winded article about what your product is! It takes up unnecessary space on thepackaging and makes it look boring. The copy on your packaging should always be concise and to the point. Itshould convey your brands message in such a way that it evokes emotion in the consumer and, ultimately, persuades them to purchase it. Make sure that the font is legible and in line with the product you are selling.

5) Test your packaging design

Just because it's your product and you like the packaging design doesn't mean that the people who will be buying itnecessarily agree. Before giving the go ahead for printing of a particular design, it's important to take a few of thecontenders and test the reactions people get when they have them in their hands, or how they feel when they see itfor the first time. Make sure that the emotions your brand is trying to convey are there. You can test this with focusgroups or your friends and family. It is important to get a second opinion and equally as important to continue testingas trends and tastes change!
