Introduction
Our vehicles are among the most visible symbols of our commitment to serving the community, and we are rightly proud of the quality and size of our fleet.
Public research showed us that we needed to make St John Ambulance vehicles more easily identifiable. The new vehicle livery designs are clearer and bolder and allow us to present a more unified look, raising publicrecognition of our services and making us more effective in our charitable community support.
By presenting ourselves as a unified organisation, we will also be seen as an organisation with professionalstandards in our service delivery. We have already seen some of the benefits of these changes, which will increaseas the livery is more widely used.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have been involved in the livery’s development and inits implementation so far.
Harry Dymond
Chief Commissioner, Operations

Recent changes to vehicle livery specifications
These revised guidelines come into effect from 15 December 2008.
Vehicles liveried in the new style between the launch of the new corporate identity in April 2007 and 15 December 2008 do not need to change.
Vehicles liveried from 15 December 2008 must comply with the revised specifications; changes to the specifications are as follows: • Rear chevrons have increased in size from 75mm width, to 150mm width (see Design section)
• Front outline along the A-pillars and roof line must be marked in reflective white, 25mm width (see Design section)
• Rear outline must be marked in reflective red, 25mm width (see Design section)
• Rear outline when side and rear doors are opened must be marked in reflective red, 25mm width (see Design section)
• KEEP CLEAR on the rear of vehicles must always be in full capitals (see page 17)
• Torque setting and tyre pressure: it is the customer’s responsibility to advise suppliers of the correct manufacturer’s specifications for their vehicles (see page 17)
• All logos on the offside of vehicles are the one-off version of the logo, developed specifically for vehicle use (see page 8)
• Permissible descriptive text has been updated (see page 16)
• Please ensure that wherever the negative version of the logo is used, for example on the rear windows, it features the halo around the roundel
• Berlingos no longer feature county and location text, and the descriptive text has been updated to: First aid and health and safety training (see Berlingo section from page 33).

The SJA vehicle livery designs include 3M diamond grade cubed (DG3) conspicuity tape (see page 11). To increaselongevity, this tape must be edge sealed once it is cut to shape: this has to be performed by an approved supplier.
The three suppliers listed above are approved by 3M to cut and edge-seal the material. They are also experienced in producing designs for St John Ambulance.
All three companies offer a fitting service, it is the choice of your fleet manager as to whether you use one of thesuppliers listed above to also fit the decal, or whether you have the decal delivered to you and applied by a localsupplier with the necessary skills and experience to fit it to a high standard.

Vehicles currently in operation
Current or second hand vehicles planned to be in operation after June 2011
If there is a need to re-stripe a vehicle, and it is expected to remain in operation after June 2011, the new vehiclelivery should be adopted. The approval of the County Commissioner should be sought for this expenditure in line with county policy.
This must happen in time for the livery change deadline of St John’s Day (24 June) 2011. However, if a vehicle isinvolved in an accident or needs any structural repairs then a full livery change at that stage is recommended.
To arrange your livery, please contact one of the suppliers listed on page 5 for a quote.
Current or second hand vehicles not planned to be in operation by June 2011
If the vehicle will not be in operation by the CI deadline of St John’s Day (24 June) 2011, you do not have to adopt the new style livery, but you do need to adopt the new logo which should cover the old logo.
However, should you want to adopt the new style livery, you may do so. The approval of the County Commissioner should be sought for this expenditure in line with county policy.
If a vehicle is involved in an accident or needs any structural repairs then a full livery change is recommended.
To arrange your livery, please contact one of the suppliers listed for a quote.
Bespoke vehicle designs MUST be approved by NHQ Creative Services prior to completion.

Design – basic elements
Only the primary, 3D version of the logo should be used on vehicles.
The version of the logo where the roundel is placed to the left of the text (version (a)); version (b) has been specifically designed for use on vehicle livery and should not be used at any other time. Version (b) should be used only on the offside of vehicles. Please note that in April 2010 the negative version of the logo was refined, and it now features a sharp halo around the roundel - all future livery kits, where applicable, must feature this version of the negative logo.
To obtain logo artwork, or should you have insufficient space to feature these versions of the logo, please contact Creative Services to discuss your requirements.
Logos must be digitally reproduced at a resolution of 720dpi using vector origination. If your livery supplier cannot reproduce at this quality, logos should be ordered from SSDM.

Vehicles intended for event cover, including trailers
Colour
• The base colour for all vehicles is white
• Except ambulances, all vehicles, including first aid support vehicles, have a white bonnet. Ambulances have a yellow bonnet, Euro Yellow RAL 1016
• The new St John Ambulance logo will feature on all four sides of every vehicle, unless a lack of space renders this impossible, in which case the Creative Services team should be contacted.
Logos
• All logos on vehicles are retro-reflective, except for those on the rear of vehicles
• The only version of the logo to be used is the principal version, with the text over two lines. The text appears to the left of the roundel on all sides of the vehicle, apart from on the offside, where the one-off version (version b) is used with the text to the right of the roundel
• If you have insufficient space to use the versions of the logo detailed in this document, please contact Creative Services to discuss your requirements.
Conspicuity (see page 11)
• First aid duty vehicles will have conspicuity tape on all sides of the vehicles
• Rear chevrons are 150mm wide positioned at a 45 degree angle, made from DG3 red and Saturn yellow
• Side stripes are DG3 green and DG3 Fl yellow
• Front reflective 25mm strips on the A-pillar and across the roof line are made from DG3 white
• The rear outline of all first aid vehicles needs to be reflective for safety purposes • The rear of each vehicle must have a thin red reflective band outlining its shape – as much needs to be covered as the flexibility of DG3 will allow. This needs to be visible when the doors are both opened and closed, therefore inside the door edges as well as out • Side doors which open out need to have a reflective red outline on the inside door edge so that they are visible from the rear of the vehicle. Again, as much of the inside door trim needs to be outlined as the flexibility of DG3 will allow.

Promotional vehicles
Vehicles that are used in any way for first aid or first aid support must be branded with the St John Ambulance standard livery as laid out in these guidelines.
The only occasion when vehicles can be branded with a promotional design is when they have a purely promotional role and are not used for any first aid duties whatsoever.
If you wish to have a vehicle, that fits the criteria above, branded in a promotional design, please contact the Creative Services department at NHQ to discuss your requirements.
Promotional vehicle designs must comply with St John Ambulance design guidelines and MUST be approved by Creative Services before any designs are finalised.
Conspicuity tape
The conspicuity tape is 3M diamond grade cubed (DG3). 3M DG3 is the tape of choice* on our ambulances and will continue to be used until further notice.
The reflective conspicuity tape on the side of first aid duty vehicles is 4097 Interstate Green and 4083 Fl Yellow, thereflective tape on the rear of vehicles is 4092 Red, and the reflective strips along the front A-pillars and roof line are 4090 White.
*Exceptions to conspicuity tape guidance
On old or second hand vehicles where the expected lifespan is short, but a full livery is needed, Reflexite material can be used instead of DG3. This material can be cut to shape by an experienced fitter on site and therefore may cost less to fit. All vehicles planned to still be in operation by St John’s Day (24 June) 2011 must feature DG3 material.
Some larger trailers may use Reflexite VC312 instead of DG3. Permission to use this material should be gained from the Operations Support department at NHQ when submitting the design for approval.

Logo placement
All logos are retro-reflective, except for those on the rear of vehicles.
Logos on front of vehicles - All Crusader ambulances, and large vans (space permitting), will have a logo above the front windscreen, the same size as the ones on the sides of the vehicle. Smaller vehicles and car types will have a logo on the bonnet instead.
Logos on rear of vehicles - Logos on the rear of vehicles should be as prominent as possible, usually positioned in the rear window. Perforated material window film (PMWF) can be used which allows vision out of the window, through perforated holes in the material. Please ensure that rear logos, where the negative version is used, feature the halo around the roundel.
Logos on sides of vehicles - When possible, side logos must be placed in the diagonal stripe (excluding trailers and large units). However this is not always possible as many vehicles have windows which the logo and text will notfit into.
In these cases, the logo must be placed on the side rear door area, as large as possible. If the logo does fit in thediagonal stripe it must be the 917 x 318mm decal size. This logo must be retro-reflective. Vehicles with this liveryinclude the Challenger ambulance.
There is a one-off version of the logo for vehicle livery. This version is only to be used on the offside of vehicles(see diagram). The nearside version (a) shows the standard logo. The version on the offside (b) of the vehicle places the roundel to the left of the words St John Ambulance. This is the only occasion that this logo will appear.

Logos and web/tel decal on rear of vehicles
• Vehicles with boots, ie. car types, do not include web/tel on the rear, just the logo
• Vehicles with two rear doors, ie. van types, display the web/tel and logo based on the Crusader layout
• Trailers/vehicles with one rear door – aim for web/tel and logo but with the SJA logo as Hi-Vis as spacing will allow
• If there is only space for either web/tel or logo, the logo always takes precedence.
Other exceptions to logo placement:
There will be some vehicles that fall outside the standard livery and will need to be assessed on an individual basis. These vehicles may vary from large trailers and buses to bicycles and golf buggies. Please contact the Creative Services team who will assess the vehicle on an individual basis and recommend suitable alternative options to logo use and placement.
Any alternative logo placement must be approved by NHQCreative Services.

Guidance on text and symbols
A fundamental element of the new livery design is that the new logo, presenting St John Ambulance as one singleorganisation, takes precedence over county names. Specific guidance on wording is as follows:
Use of the word ‘ambulance’
The word ‘ambulance’ can only be used if the vehicle meets the following criteria:
The vehicle is:
• constructed or adapted for, and used for no other purpose than, the carriage of sick, injured or disabled people to or from welfare centres or places where medical or dental treatment is given, and
• readily identifiable as a vehicle used for the carriage of such people by being marked ‘ambulance’ on both sides.
Ambulances are exempt from road tax, therefore these definitions, taken from Schedule 2 to the Vehicle Excise and Registration Act 1994, must be taken into consideration.
If the vehicle does not meet the criteria, it is classed as a first aid support vehicle only and does not need the wordambulance on the front, rear and sides. If in doubt please contact the Operations Support department at NationalHeadquarters by emailing [email protected]

Use of the word ‘Crusader’
The word ‘Crusader’ must not appear on any new ambulances and must be removed if ambulances presently in use are booked in for a full re-livery.
County, location
• The county name must be shown in full; this can be followed by the location if required. The division or unit name cannot appear. The word ‘headquarters’ should not appear
• The county name always comes before the location on both sides of a vehicle, reading left to right
• The nearside county name and location is ranged to the left, and the offside county name and location is ranged to the right: • of the front side-panel window-edge on Crusaders and ‘van’ type vehicles (a) • of the front door window-edge on Challengers, Cobras, Companions and ‘car’ type vehicles (b)
• Where the county or location text name extends over two panels, then the location text will move on to the next panel
• All county and location text must appear in lower case Humanist 777 font, with the initial letter in capitals only.

Call sign
The call sign must be placed on all four sides and the roof of vehicles used for event cover.
Compressed gas hazard label
The compressed gas sticker must be placed on the rear of the vehicle where such a sticker is deemed necessary; this is also the appropriate place for other such identifiers. The sticker should be the standard green diamond for compressed gas with the ‘2’ at the bottom.
Descriptive text
Descriptors on the side of ambulances and first aid support vehicles will be kept to a minimum. The only permissible descriptive text is:
• AMBULANCE • SUPPORT UNIT • TREATMENT CENTRE • COMMAND AND CONTROL UNIT.
Any exceptions to this must be approved by the Creative Services team at NHQ.
Donors, supporters, sponsorship and third party logos
Donor, supporter and sponsorship details, including any third party logo, must cover an area no wider than 290mm (the length of a sheet of A4 paper), with 20mm caps height text. Third party information that covers an area larger than A4 is deemed as advertising and liable for VAT – this restriction must be adhered to.
If a vehicle is named in memoriam, then the wording must appear no larger than the county name, unless specificapproval is given by the Creative Services team.
The text and any third party logo should be positioned below the driver and passenger windows on Crusaders and ‘van’ types, and on the side rear-panel of ‘car’ types. Please contact the Creative Services team at National Headquarters to approve the use of a third party logo and also whenever there is not enough room on the vehicle to apply the full wording within a space no wider than 290mm.
Any alternative placement has to be approved by the Creative Services team before livery is applied.

ISO 9001 accreditation text
The optional ISO 9001 for patient transport will be placed on the side rear-panels of Crusader ambulances. This will be no bigger than 150mm in diameter. If your county has been awarded ISO 9001 accreditation and wants to include this logo on vehicles, you must supply an EPS file of the appropriate logo to your livery supplier.
KEEP CLEAR
The keep clear text on the rear of vehicles must be in full capitals: KEEP CLEAR
The star of life
The star of life emblem is not part of the St John Ambulance identity and will not be used. We are not obliged to use it through any UK or EU guidelines.
Torque setting and tyre pressure
Customers must advise the livery supplier of the manufacturer’s specifications for torque setting and tyre pressure, taken from the vehicle handbook or manual, to ensure that the correct details are included on the vehicle.

Livery specifications
Full livery specifications for the St John Ambulance nationally agreed vehicles are held by the three main suppliers(see page 5).
The main suppliers hold specifications of vehicles other than the nationally agreed vehicles, which have been approved by the Creative Services team at National Headquarters.
Due to the variety of vehicles in the fleet, there will be occasions where the livery supplier will need to survey the vehicle to create a template for the new livery, if the specifications for that exact vehicle are not already held.
If this is the case, you will be provided with a bespoke vehicle livery. Bespoke vehicle livery designs should be based on the closest matching NHQ agreed vehicle in terms of purpose and type of vehicle, referring to the principles set out in these guidelines.
General arrangement diagrams are included from page 19. Please note that these are included as a general guide to how vehicles should look and are not engineering diagrams or detailed enough to be used as decal placement guides.
Most trailers will need a bespoke vehicle livery design as they differ greatly in shape, size and make. Your chosen livery supplier will produce a design in line with guidance from this document, that is as close as possible a match to other trailer liveries that have been produced. Some examples are included in this document from page 37. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Creative Services team at NHQ.
Bespoke vehicle livery designs, including trailers, MUST be approved by NHQ Creative Services priorto completion.

Bespoke vehicles, trailers and treatment centres
Bespoke vehicles
Bespoke vehicle livery designs should be based on the closest matching NHQ agreed vehicle livery in terms of purpose and type of vehicle, referring to the relevant sections of these guidelines in cases where it is unclear how to apply an NHQ agreed vehicle design to a bespoke vehicle.
Some design examples are included here, please note that these are examples only and not set designs – you must work with Creative Services and your chosen livery supplier to produce a design that adheres to the principles in theseguidelines while taking into account the specifications of your vehicle.
Trailers and treatment centres
Trailers and treatment centres differ greatly in shape, size and make and will almost always need a bespoke vehiclelivery. A typical issue for these types of vehicles is that the size and position of doors and windows limit the space in which logos and descriptive text can be positioned. Both must be given as much prominence as possible.
Some design examples are included here. Please note that these are examples only and not set designs – you must work with Creative Services and your chosen livery supplier to produce a design that adheres to the principles in theseguidelines while taking into account the specifications of your vehicle.
Some large vehicles do not need to use 3M DG3 conspicuity tape. Please refer to the conspicuity tape section on page 11 for information about conspicuity tape exceptions and alternatives.
