Tinniam V [email protected]
Our life is a series of choices we make We are free to choose the course of action
in the space between stimulus and response
While we have control over the choices we make we have no control over the consequences
Success is not a destination. Success is a journey
Based on Self Awareness Imagination Conscience Independent will
The Character Ethic provides basic principles of effective living Foundation is based on principles of integrity, humility, fidelity,
temperance, courage, justice, patience, industry, modesty With character ethic one can experience true and enduring
success in life.
Personality ethic relies on human and public relations- Positive mental attitude- Communication abilitiesAttitude determines altitudeSmiling wins more friends
You will reap only what you sowYou cannot rush your crop to grow without the necessary work to
plough, till, sow and maintain prior to harvest
Fundamental character strength is required for long lasting success.
What we are communicates more effectively than what we say!
Character Ethic is based on the idea that there are principles that govern human effectiveness
Principles are like light houses They are natural laws that cannot be broken Principles govern human growth and happiness and woven into
the fabric of society
Principle of fairness Integrity, honesty Respect Service to others Principles are guidelines for human conduct Proven to have enduring value
Principle centered, character based, inside-out approach to personal and inter-personal effectiveness
Inside-out means to start with the self, your character and your motives
Internalized principles and patterns of behavior
We are what we repeatedly do, Excellence, then is a not an act, but a habit.
Aristotle
Habits are the intersection of knowledge, skills and desire.
Knowledge – What to do and why to do Skill – how to do Desire – Want to do
Knowledge on interaction, learning the skillsUpward movementWorking on knowledge, skill and desire we can break through new
levels of personal and interpersonal effectiveness.
The Seven Habits are not a piece meal formulaIt is harmony of natural lawsThe Maturity continuum moves from independence to
interdependence Habits 1,2 & 3 – deal with self mastery. Deal with private victories
based on character Habits 4,5 & 6 – public victories of teamwork, cooperation and
communication Habit 7 – Is the habit of renewal. Balanced and regular renewal of
the basic dimensions of life
PRIVATE VICTORY
PUBLIC VICTORY
1. Be Proactive
3. Put first things first
1. Begin with the end in mind
4. Think Win/Win
6.Synergize
5.Seek first to understand then to be understood
7.Sharpen the saw
Seven Habits
For Long term beneficial resultsThere has to be P/PC balance
P – ProductionPC – Production Capability
Habit 1
Be Pro-active
Our conditioning depends on- Genetic determinism- Psychic determinism- Environmental determinism
Our choices are determined by the above 3 conditioning
Habit 1 says “You are the creator. You are in charge”.It is based on imagination, conscience, independent will and self-
awareness.
- In the space between stimulus and response we are free to make a choice. We should not wait for stimuli and then respond. This is reactive behavior.
We need to be pro-active.
- Taking the initiative- It is more than that.- Proactive people do not blame circumstances, conditions or
conditioning for their behavior. The behavior is a product of their own conscious choice , based on values.
Pro-active people carry their own weather with themReactive people are affected by social environment or social
weather.Theryreact to how society treats them
Proactive people are driven by values and not by circumstances
Circle of Concern
Circle of Influence
Reactive people
Pro-active people
Reactive vs. Pro-active people
Act, don’t be acted upon.Drive. Don’t be driven.Taking the initiative is recognizing our responsibility to make things
happen
The best way to predict the future is to create it. Abraham Lincoln
Habit 2
Begin with the end in Mind
All things are created twiceFirst there is the mental creationSecond the physical creation.
Carpenter’s rule – Measure twice, cut once
If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail.
It is first mental creation based on imagination, the ability to envision
On a vacation you plan the routePlan, plan your moves in lifeHabit 1 says you are the creatorHabit 2 is the first creation
What do you want be in 3, 5 10 years in your professional career.
If you don’t know where you are going, you will go nowhere!
Habit 2 is based on the principles of Personal Leadership
Leadership is doing the right things. Management is doing things right.
We need to have a long term vision, a goal.
Create a Personal mission statementWhat do you want to achieve in your personal, professional and
social lives?Your actions will flow from your personal mission statement“To have a quality life at home, to become a VP with the next 12
years and to increase my circle of friends to 500+”
To write a personal mission statement we need to start at the center of the Circle of Influence
Here we have our vision and values. We have principles and our paradigms.
At the center we have security, direction, wisdom and the capacity to act.
Identify roles & goalsSon/father/husband, professional/subordinate/boss, friend
Roles and goals give a organized direction to your personal mission
Habit 3
Put first things first.
Habit 3 is the second creation. It is the fulfillment and the actualization of Habits 1 & 2
Habit 3 is effective self –management.
Time management focuses on things and timeSelf management focuses on achieving results or on maintaining the
P/PC balance.

PRIVATE VICTORY
PUBLIC VICTORY
1. Be Proactive
3. Put first things first
1. Begin with the end in mind

Seven Habits
Emotional bank account determines the amount of trust in a relationship
- Deposits in the Emotional account of kindness, courtesy, commitment we build a reserve
Understand the individual Attending to little things Keeping commitments Clarifying expectations Showing personal integrity Apologizing sincerely
Habit 4
Think Win - Win.
Win-Win is based on 5 dimensions Character Maturity Abundance mentality Relationships Agreement
In a library there are 2 old- One wants the window open to let in some
fresh air- Another wants it closed to prevent the draft
The librarian’s solution- Open the window in another room
Both men were happy!
Behind opposing positions are common interests.
Focus on interests and not on positions (Getting to Yes
In 1978 Israel occupied Mount Sinai since the 6 day war of 1967
Egypt wanted every bit of Mount Sinai back while Israel insisted on keeping it. It appeared incompatible
Israel was interested in its security Egypt in its sovereignty
Solution – Mount Sinai returned and made a de-militarized zone.
Reconcile interests rather than positions.
Habit 5
Seek first to understand then to be understood.
Empathetic listening – seek to understand We listen with an intent to reply not to understand Empathy is not sympathy. Sympathy is a form of agreement Empathy is fully, deeply understand the person emotionally and
intellectually
Work as a cohesive whole Synergy when there is resonance When the whole is greater than the sum of its parts
Habit 7
Renewal.
Sharpen the saw
Quadrant II activity Improves the P/PC balance
Management is common sense, which is not very common.
Good luck & Thank You !
