MYTH: A companys website is an accurate depiction of their current job openings.

REALITY: In an ideal world this would be true; however, often overworked recruiters or hiring managers do not have the time to enter the new jobs online or delete the old ones. Most companies have unofficial or unadvertised job openings. If the right candidate applied, the recruiter would pursue his or her resume.

MYTH: If I send my resume to a company several times it will get noticed and they will see how interested I am in their company.

REALITY: Although the company may notice your resume, it will not be for a good reason.

MYTH: All companies use the major job boards to search for candidates and post job openings.

REALITY: Most companies operate on a limited recruiting budget. Advertising job openings and searching the candidate databases of the major job boards can become quite expensive. To offset recruiting costs many companies choose to post openings on their company website or on niche job boards where they are more likely to find the type of candidate they want.

REALITY: In todays technological recruiting world, recruiters are bombarded with resumes. Although a recruiter may notice your resume and have the best intentions to call you, you may get lost in the paperwork (or email work).

REALITY: Inexpensive storage solutions, advanced software programs and discrimination law suits ensure that most if not all correspondence and interviewing notes are recorded and easily accessible.

ACTION: If you have a bad track record or experience with a company, dont waste your time applying again. Chances are you are not going to get hired.

MYTH: I interviewed with a company several months ago, it went very well and the manager wanted to offer me a job, but a hiring freeze was enacted. The hiring manager will call me with the hiring freeze is lifted.

REALITY: If you dont follow up with the manager he/she may assume you have found other work, or they may have forgotten about you, lost your number, etc - it is worth a follow up call.

ACTION: Follow up with the manager until you get a definitive no. Ensure you use the our techniques outlined in Chapter 6.

MYTH: It is illegal for a hiring company to use social networking sites to find out information about candidates.

REALITY: Not true. Savvy recruiters will often conduct Google searches or search social media sites to find out information about candidates before they call them. Information found on these sites could be very detrimental to your job search.

ACTION: Ensure that you have properly branded yourself as a great candidate (refer to Chapter Two)

MYTH: Hiring authorities dont accept phone calls from candidates.

REALITY: A hiring manager may be too busy to take your call, but a well composed voice message about your interest in a position will certainly raise your application above other candidates.

ACTION: Call the hiring manager and express your interest in the position either personally or via a voice message (refer to Chapter Six).
