I'm too busy for classes and besides, is there anything new to learn about presentation?”

We’ve found two distinct groups:• Those who think they know everything they need to know• Those who are willing and eager to learn

This imaginary case study illustrates the comments we often hear from both groups.

My slides looked great but I realized they weren't as important as the discussion. At one point I stopped the slides and we just talked. That was great.

My slides looked great.

Did you use any transitions or animations?

I was able to focus on the audience. I didn't have any transitions, animations or bullet lists. They liked the story about a recent client who had a need similar to theirs.

I used some pretty cool transitions and animations to keep things interesting.

Did you get hammered with questions?

My presentation was designed to encourage conversation. They talked more than I did. I learned a lot about what they really want from listening. In the past, I just wanted to cover everything.

I nailed it. At the end, they had no questions. They had all the facts; what's to discuss?

Did the audience fully understand your presentation?

I turned it from "me presenting" to "us discussing". I don't like jargon so I avoided annoying catch phrases. Once the conversation started, I learned about changes they were making internally. That will help my team understand what this company wants.

I gave them a value proposition loaded with deliverables and promises that siloed into their best practices and aligned with their company culture.
