Our analysis - Definition of Competitiveness

• Competitiveness is a comparative concept of the ability and performance of a firm, sub-sector or country to sell and supply goods and/or services in a given market.

• Competitiveness can be at three levels:• Firm Level• Industry Level• Nation Level

• During the course of this project we are focusing on INDUSTRY and CLUSTER level competitiveness

• Measures of competitiveness at the industry level include • overall profitability of the nation's firms in the industry, • the nation's trade balance in the industry, • the balance of outbound and inbound foreign direct investment,

and direct measures of cost and quality at the industry level.

Porter’s Five Forces Model

Porter’s five forces model is the most important model used to describe and assess the competitiveness for firms as well as for the Industry.

Competitiveness in Business

1. Competitiveness has three aspects:• Innovation• Productivity • Sustainability

2. Strategic Innovation can be realized through • Leadership Management• Innovative Business Models• Research and Development for New Products, Technology,

Processes or Substitutes

3. The information technology investment has a strong impact on performance of the firm

• Whenever there are greater environmental changes, more proactive company strategy and closer CEO/CIO ties, there is a strong positive impact on financial performance.

• IT can complement diversification strategy investment in the firm.• IT forms a major part of corporate investment and the management of IT. Computer

technology significantly complements the strategy of unrelated diversification. • Research utilizing entropy measures of diversification from data compiled firm to

industries – chemical and electronics provide empirical support to this hypothesis.

Textile and Accessories - Process Criticality

• Sales and Marketing: The textile vertical is greatly export-oriented hence can leverage ICT in increasing export and business development activities.

• Customer Relationship Management: Customers are large in numbers and quick and transparent flow of information between client and firms is critical for the success of firms.

• Design: The design requirements from clients are transmitted via ICT and textile designs have short product lifecycles hence there is a need to be quick in keeping up with the changing requirements of customers. Due to such short fashion cycles areas of merchandise management become critical.

• HRM and Payroll: Compared to other verticals the textile sector is more labor intensive and hence this area becomes more critical. Firms in the textile vertical are significantly behind firms in other sectors in deriving Benefits from ICT adoption.
