What did Staffordshire want to achieve?

• Capturing the views and experiences of children and young people on a child protection plan

– Identified by our own internal auditing process– Implementing Professor Munro recommendations of getting back to social

work

• Improving the quality of practice – Social Worker time spent with the child – direct work

• Improving outcomes for the child– Decisions and recommendations made at child protection conference

• Improve Current/Future Services

The Process:

• A Working Group – Social Work Team Managers, Independent Chairs, Children’s Voice Project to scope requirements –– Age – Format– process

• Pilot in three Safeguarding Units with children under 10years– feedback was positive from social workers and children– Changed the language throughout the toolkits

• Launched across all of the 18 SSUs - April 2012

• Reviewing October 2013.

Feedback to date

• 6 month review• Experiences of the Child audit – increased evidence of

the voice of the child when compared to last year’s audit• Children / Young People / Parent

‘love the stickers and the colours..’Young Boy was sad/worried about his Dad in Afghanistan so Mum helped to reassure’

• Social Workers/Team Managers –‘Younger children have responded very positively to the stickers and being able to personalise their folders’
