Setting Goals
• Make sure it is something you want (doesn’t just sound good)
• Can’t be in conflict with other goals or your values• Realistic and achievable• Specific and measurable• Short- and long-term steps• Written down with deadlines
Motivating Yourself
• Put plans on paper. Spell out goals and specific ways to reach them.
• Break the goal down into small pieces so that you have no excuse for not starting it.
• Establish checkpoints so you can check on your progress.
• Remind yourself of the benefits you expect from completion of the goal.
• Avoid temptation by deliberately avoiding circumstances that might sidetrack you. (GET STARTED, don’t stall.)
• Take advantage of energy peaks, those periods of the day when you are habitually in top form.
Motivating Yourself
Motivating Yourself
• Take risks. Don’t be afraid to try new methods.• Set deadlines and hold yourself to them.• Make an honest distinction between “I can’t” and “I
don’t want to.”
Motivating Yourself
• Decide how you want to start. What needs to be done first?
• Use self-signaling devices…notes, cues, reminders.• Recognize conflicts and make a choice. Don’t let
inertia set in.• Give yourself the right to make mistakes. No one is
perfect.
De-Motivating Others
• Using fear• Thinking that what motivates me, motivates others.• Not recognizing that supporting others’ motivation is
a process, not a task.
How To Help Motivate Others
• Find out what motivates others• Reinforce when you see progress• Celebrate achievements
