LTE Base Station Market Forecast 2014-2024: Top Companies Creating the Next Generation Infrastructure for 4G Mobile Telecommunications

7. Expert Opinion

7.1 Visiongain Interview with NEC Visiongain conducted an interview with Ravinder Raina, Country Head - Platform Solutions Group

at NEC India Pvt. Limited about his viewpoint of the LTE Base Station market.

7.1.1 Competitive Differentiation Driving the LTE Base Station Market Visiongain: What are the possible market drivers and restraints in the LTE Base Station

market?

Ravinder Raina: Competitive differentiation and being first to market are the key reasons for

launching LTE. The biggest challenges facing operators deploying LTE are business-oriented:

pricing models and lack of a clear business proposition.

7.1.2 Key Trends & Developments in the LTE Base Station Market Visiongain: What would you say are the key trends and recent developments in the LTE

Base Station market and why?

Ravinder Raina: The following LTE base station deployment models are becoming popular:

• Multiradio base stations (MR-BTS): These base stations usually power more than one air

interface, often all GSM, UMTS and LTE. They are also referred to as "single RAN," in

which a single baseband unit & radio remote unit support concurrent technologies in order

to save on cell-site real estate, power and maintenance.

• LTE overlay: In this case, LTE technology is laid over an existing network, without affecting

the operation of previous air interfaces. This is also common in markets where networks

have been modernized with MS-BTS, or in cases where LTE has to be deployed rapidly for

quick market entry.

Both LTE-deployment models offer relative merits and drawbacks, which are typically influenced by

market status, the existing network, vendor relationships, spectrum holdings, the availability of LTE

in the particular market and a variety of other factors.

In January 2014, Telkomsel Indonesia recently upgraded its GSM and 3G HSPA+ network

throughout the country using NSN's radio and core network, as well as comprehensive services.

NSN also provided refarming services for the 1800MHz GSM band, which helped the carrier to

provider 4G LTE services for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) CEO summit in Bali,

Oct. 1-8, 2013. It was the first publicly available LTE network in that Asian nation.

Under the contract to upgrade Telekomsel’s GSM and 3G network, NSN supplied its Single RAN

platform; in addition, the company implemented its NetAct network management system that

enables consolidated monitoring, management and operation of Telkomsel’s GSM and 3G

network. The contract covers network planning and optimization, network implementation, system

integration, as well as care services from NSN.
