INTRODUCTION

Agriculture is the backbone and single largest sector of Pakistan’s economy as its

contribution to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) exceeded 25.3 percent during 1997‐98. Crops,

livestock, fishing and forestry sub‐sectors being its main components, only crop and livestock

sub‐sectors are of critical importance. The livestock sub‐sector however has not followed suit. It has

risen from 27.3 percent in 1969‐70 to 36.2 percent in 1997‐98. Apart from its contributions to

national income, the livestock sub‐sector is an active employer of thousands of landless poor and

subsistence and semi‐subsistence small farming families.

Being a household activity, women are a special beneficiary of employment in the sub‐sector. It is a

major source of nourishment like milk, butter oil, eggs and meat and adds immensely to the health,

nutrition and well being of rural as well as urban people. While animal fat and butter oil supplies

are helpful in containing vegetable oil imports, many products of livestock origin such as wool and

wool products, leather and leather made‐ups and animal casings are exported and contribute

significantly to hard earned foreign exchange [Ahmad, Ahmad and Chaudhry (1996)].

Livestock Farming is an integral part of rural smallholders and has a vast untapped potential for

productivity increase and income generation. Livestock holdings by the small farmers constitute a

significant portion of the farm incomes. Small farmers and landless livestock producers derive

around 10–25 percent of their incomes from this sub‐sector. There have been and, largely, still are

two primary purposes of raising livestock:

To meet the dietary needs of the rural and urban populace for milk and meat

consumption; and

To fulfill the work performance requirements of

the farm.

To generate hard cash and accomplish their

immediate needs.

Generally the small livestock farmers living in rural

areas are illiterate and have limited access to

sources of information for better Livestock

Farming; ultimately they are getting very low

against the effort they are making. To improve their

farming practices Awareness Raising Campaigns

has been designed as an essential part of Barkat Project (detail ahead).

Goal/Objectives of Campaign: The primary objective of this awareness campaign was to teach farmers to adopt better Livestock

Farming so that they may get more profit against their efforts of rearing animals at household level.

Main points include;

To teach farmers about importance of their livestock in their income circle and livelihood

To teach them about possible solutions of the issues they daily face regarding health of animals

To aware them about the available technical facilities & services around them

To strengthen their connectivity with Barkat technical team to seek knowledge and avail

Target community and Participation:

Barkat Project has established its livestock partners (Barkat Partners) in three UCs of district

Khanewal. Main focus of the campaign was to ensure participation of Barkat Partners in designed

activities but other farming community living around was also encouraged to participate the

activities and it was very much encouraging that many farmers who were not our partners showed

interest and actively participated to get maximum benefit from the expert’s advice and services.

Regarding participation our team was keen to attract those family members who were actually

involved in their routine livestock related activities. We ensured the youth to participate the

awareness sessions because we find it necessary to engage their future generation in this valuable

aspect of their income generation & livelihood.

We haven’t ignored even women participation because we know that women are also equal

important stakeholders regarding Livestock Farming at house hold level. They are practically

involved in daily task of feeding the animals and caring about their health.

their door step and our expert is only at a phone call away to reach you in time. He also shared the

contact number to call at in time of need.

Question answer:

At the end of every activity participants asked questions from the experts about their issues and

topics discussed. Experts answered their queries and distributed printed awareness material.

Observations & finding:

Team observed the things closely and found that;

Community is responsive if properly mobilized

They have thrust of improving their lives

Youth is willing to take part in such healthy initiatives and play role

Women are more involved in domestic livestock and willing to learn for improvement

Community is still practicing outdated practices of livestock handling

There is need to improve animal protection and care

Farmers are not well aware about available technical

services in the area

Vaccination trend is low

Community is more interested in keeping

cows than goats

There is no shortage of fodder in these areas

Grazing spaces is not enough for goats due to

dense crops

There is need to strengthen coordination between

Barkat Vet. Assistant and community

Page 12: Livestock farmer awarness

Recommendations:

On the basis of observations and interaction with farmers our experts recommended that;

There is need to repeat such campaigns. The awareness component of the Barkat Project

shall plan the regular activities based on findings and needs.

Framers and expert connection needs to be strong and urgent.

Service VIC very important so a special campaign should be launched to tell farmer about

the availability of this service in their area and how beneficial it can be for them.

Schedule of vaccines needs to be shared with farmers frequently

Youth vaccinators should be trained

Launching SMS system to teach farmers

Follow up and Feedback:

Field team of the Barkat Project was advised to keep in touch with the participants so that actual

feedback of the farmers about outcome of session and health of treated animals may be noted.

Team will also monitor and record the improvements in practices of farmers.

Outcome:

After completing the campaign we are expecting positive outcome against the set goal and

objectives. We are looking for;

1. Adoption of better farming practices

2. Community following the vaccination schedule

3. Barkat team receiving more calls from the farmer about their farming issues

4. Vet. Assistant more busy in reaching farmer to address the health issues of their animals in

recent days

5. More questions from target farmers at VIC

6. Stronger coordination between farmers and Barkat team

7. Youth following the instructions of experts and more involved in household farming

8. Ultimately less cases of treatment and better heath conditions

9. More satisfied farmer with the benefit they get from their animals

10. Farmers believing in that the Livestock Farming is best option for them to generate income

and reduce their poverty
