Identify the Right Industrial
Grinder for Your Metalworking
Application
Grinders are metalworking
machines used to
manufacturer a wide variety of
parts for myriad industries.
Understanding the
requirements of the part being
manufactured is an important
step to selecting the right type
of grinding machine.
Grinders: Versatile, Precise Manufacturing
Centerless grinding machines
are often used to produce
massive volumes of accurate,
round components such as
copier rolls, drills, mills, pins and
rotary shafts.
Centerless grinders only grind
the outer diameter of the part,
but accommodate throughfeed
and infeed applications and
meet precise tolerances.

Centerless Grinders: The Workhorse
Mainly designed to grind the
outer diameter of parts held
between centers, look for
cylindrical grinders in facilities
that process cylinders, ellipses,
cams and crankshafts.
If needed, an internal diameter
grinding head can be added to
grind the inside of a hollow shaft
or part.
Cylindrical grinders are
available as CNC or manual.
Cylindrical Grinders
The universal grinder
is a close cousin of the
cylindrical grinder.
This machine
combines OD (plunge
and/or angle wheels)
and ID wheels,
allowing for complex
parts to be processed
with only one set-up.
Universal Grinders
As the name implies, an ID grinding machine grinds the inside diameter of
a part. The grinding wheel passes around the workpiece which is held in
place by a collet.
ID Grinders
This vertical spindle grinder is
used mainly to remove material
at high rates from one side of a
large workpiece.
Featuring abrasive segments
rather than the traditional round
grinding wheel, Blanchard
grinding gets its name from the
well-respected Blanchard
Machine Company.
Surface Grinders
This horizontal double-
spindle grinder is used
mainly on work pieces with
flat and parallel opposing
sides.
The workpiece travels
between both wheels where
it is simultaneously ground
on both sides.
Double-disc Grinders
Along with tool sharpening
applications, hence the
name, this popular and
flexible grinding machine
can be used to sharpen a
variety of cutting tooling.
Various attachments are
available to accommodate
most types of cutting tools.
