HOLIDAY GIFT GIVING GUIDE

The holiday gift giving season is a sure thing. Although it only comes once a year, it can often bring anxiety and procrastination. But, it doesn’t have to be that way. Really!

Let’s make it easier for you and your business or organization…

Why Give Holiday Gifts?

Demonstrate Customer Appreciation

Customers* who feel appreciated and valued tend to stick around, increase their purchasing or loyalty, and recommend your biz/org to others. As long as you continue to provide exceptional service, and what you offer brings value, they won’t have a reason to leave.

I’ll bet that you say “thank you” after each customer transaction, but what about your frequent or high-value customers? The holiday season is an excellent time to show your appreciation in a bigger way. “Without customers, your business would not exist.” (from Beyond Your Logo: 7 Brand Ideas That Matter Most For Small Business Success, ©2015)*Customers include anyone your business/organization serves: clients, consumers, members, donors, volunteers, etc.

Demonstrate Employee Appreciation

As with external customers, your biz/org would not exist without internal customers – its employees. More than 60% of businesses give gifts to employees during the holiday season to show their appreciation for their relationship and hard work over the past year. There are several things that employees really appreciate:• Cash (not related to performance)• Gift cards• Extra time off• Promotions (that come with pay increases)• Flexible work hoursIf you offer one of these options, employees will still appreciate a token gift during the season. If you don’t offer one of these options, then a nice holiday gift is certainly in order.

Maintain the Seasonal Spirit• Milad un Nabi (Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday) (December 13,

2016)• Hanukkah (Evening of December 24, 2016 – Evening of January 1,

2017)• Christmas (December 25, 2016)• Kwanzaa (December 26 2016 - January 1, 2017)• New Year’s Eve (December 31, 2016)• Orthodox Christmas (January 7, 2017)

Keep Your Brand Front and CenterThe holiday season is a busy one with parties, decorations, and uplifted spirits. Even though your customers will likely receive other business-related gifts and greeting cards, you don’t want to stand out as the one who didn’t send anything! If you think they won’t notice the omission, think again.

Giving holiday gifts keeps your brand top of mind with customers, prospects, and lapsed customers. The more they see and hear about it, the greater the chance they’ll remember it when it’s time to make a purchase or respond to a call to action.

Past surveys of corporate gift givers and recipients by the Promotional Products Association International (PPAI), discovered that vendors who gave gifts were twice as likely to increase their chances of being contacted by recipients as those that didn’t have a gift program.

Reduce Your Tax LiabilityOK, so this one shouldn’t be the main reason you give out holiday gifts, but it sure is a benefit!

In the U.S., your biz/org can deduct up to $25 per business gift, per person annually. An item is not considered a gift (and the $25 limit doesn’t apply) if it costs less than $4, has your biz/org name and/or logo clearly imprinted on it, and is one of many identical items you give away on a regular basis. Write a Holiday Gift Plan

9

Page 10: Holiday Gift Giving Guide

You don’t need to write a dissertation! Your holiday gift plan can include the following:• Your overall budget• A recipient list • Distribution details: Mail? In person? Shipping?• Drop dates: for shipping/mailing, giving in personYou may choose to develop different gift categories for specific groups of people. For example, for B2C (business-to-consumer) customers, you may want to give out inexpensive trinkets at the cash desk or inside a shipping package. For frequent or high-value customers, you may decide to give something more substantial. You can segregate B2B (business-to-business) customers in a variety of ways: by current sales volume, geography, relationship, future sales potential, product or service line, etc. You can then decide how much to spend for each group.

Choosing Holiday Gifts

12

Page 13: Holiday Gift Giving Guide

Things to consider:• Be sensitive to others’ religious beliefs and cultures. Not

everyone celebrates Christmas.• Don’t get too personal with your gift choices. Anything a

significant other would buy is probably inappropriate as a business gift.

• Recipients from the same place of business will compare gifts if you give something different to each one. Either buy one larger group gift or the same item for each of them.

• Consider practical gifts that people will use. Try avoiding gifts that end up in re-gifting collections.

• Some experts suggest avoiding alcoholic gifts in case some recipients are in addiction recovery or are teetotalers.

• Avoid buying cheaply-made items that can break or malfunction easily. These will leave a bad brand impression on your recipients and likely end up in the trash.

• Check for gift receiving policies. Some may have value limits or may discourage gifts altogether.

13

Why Choose Branded Gifts?

• They build brand recognition and team spirit and deliver your message for far longer than other forms of advertising.

• They remain less expensive per impression than most other forms of advertising.

• As advertising vehicles, they are the most highly regarded - more than newspaper, radio, magazine, television, Internet, and mobile ads!

• There are tens of thousands of promotional product options in all price ranges.

• You can use any extras during the year for all kinds of reasons, such as thank-you gifts, prizes, incentives, customer acquisition, etc.

Other Important Stats:• In total, 42% have a more favorable opinion of an advertiser if the product they

received was environmentally friendly.• In total, 53% have a more favorable opinion of an advertiser if the product was made

in the USA.• People who receive ad specialty products will typically give them to someone else

when they are finished with them, thus furthering the advertiser’s reach.• Usefulness outweighs attractiveness by at least five to one with the exception of

apparel items such as shirts, outerwear or hats. People say these are the most enjoyable to have.
