The debate goes on about whether graffiti is a form of art or simply an act
of vandalism. It’s true that some graffiti display colourful and meaningful
messages, but the area where they’re painted is probably the reason
property owners are disappointed. Everybody is free to express themselves
through any form, but where is the line drawn before graffiti becomes
bothersome to others?
Graffiti as Art
George C. Stowers, the author of “Graffiti Art: An Essay Concerning The
Recognition of Some Forms of Graffiti as Art”, said that graffiti is an art
form that expresses in either simple tags or complicated pieces. He said
that he doesn’t consider tags as art because these don’t have aesthetic
appeal. Complicated pieces, on the other hand, need imagination and use
elements like colour and composition.
Many people see graffiti as a nuisance, but it has been gaining attention
and recognition in the world of art. Australians are used to seeing graffiti in
public spaces, whether on building walls or tunnels. Some appreciate them
because they make a statement, while others simply don’t get the
message.
Graffiti as Vandalism
The New South Wales Crime Prevention site
considers graffiti vandalism as a crime. It
damages the aesthetics of a property without
the owner’s permission. It also affects the
community because they have to spend on
removing and preventing such actions from
taking place.
Australians spend millions of
dollars per year to clean up and
repair the damages graffiti has
caused. Instead of using the money
for other projects, they’re
spending it on cleanups. As a
result, many property owners are
looking for anti-graffiti coatings
and glass materials to prevent
further damages and expenses.
Street art or vandalism, different people see graffiti differently. The
important thing is that those who are doing them should know their limits,
especially where they decide to paint.
