“Paumanok? I’ve heard the name,” said the old bayman. “Fish-shape, I think they called it – old Indian

name for this Island, but I’ll tell you one thing, ma’am, fish-shape’s got nothing to do with it. This Island

ought to be shaped like a clam. That’s what it is – a hard-shell clam, and if you want to know about it,

it’s mighty hard to open and get its story…Well, I guess there is a kind of romance about Wall Street,

but I tell you, you can get all the romance you want right here, right out of this little old hard-shell clam

of an island.”

“Chic simplicity” as the concept for the hotel in Long Island

City reflects on an image of the Island as an urban home

surrounded by water. Simplicity of the past life of bay men

and early settlerers is combined with a touch of chic-ness

– it’s like ‘the pearl necklace woman should not leave out

when going to the beach’, said Coco Channel once.

The space of the hotel thus provides a modern, comfortably

chic enclosure that contrasts with the industrial surround-

ings. Monochromatic in its color palette, the space’s charm

is built on contrast in texture and play of light.
