option 1: adaptive reuse• Currently vocational services organization: provide help to
those who face barriers to employmet (i.e. disabled, etc.)
• Moving to South Hill and building does not yet foresee a future use
• Opportunity to RE-URBANIZE!

option 2: urban infill• Currently a private parking lot
• Located at the south end of the Commons across from Cornell Daily Sun Office
• Could potentially activate and extend the Commons
• Obvious opportunity to RE-URBANIZE!

urban infill:infill is the use of land within a built-up area for further construction, especially as part of a community redevelopment or growth management program or as part of smart growth. It focuses on the reuse and repositioning of obsolete or underutilized buildings and sites. This type of development is essential to renewing blighted neighborhoods and knitting them back together with more prosperous communities.
methods:• increase activity: more restaurants, shops, etc.• increase density: more housing, office space, etc.• or BOTH! = mixed-use development

adaptive reuseBy Laura Schultz
D+E|E+D
adaptive reuseadaptive reuse is the process of adapting old structures for purposes other than those initially intended.
Adaptive reuse, along with brownfield reclamation, is seen by many as a key factor in land conservation and reducing the amount of sprawl. For those who prescribe to the smart growth concept, it is more efficient and environmentally responsible to redevelop older buildings closer to urban cores than it is to build new construction on faraway greenfield sites.
advantages:• historic preservation• infrastructure is in
place• green field is
preserved• recycling brownfield
disadvantages:• program may not fit• can be dangerous• upfront cost may be higher• obsolete
