How Creativity works

Separate your Thinking:

1. Diverge to generate as many options as possible

2. Converge to select ideas with the most leverage

!

Page 8: Creative Storytelling TEDx Torino 2010

Divergent Thinking

• Defer judgment• Combine and build on

ideas• Seek Wild ideas• Go for quantity• Write anything

!

Page 9: Creative Storytelling TEDx Torino 2010

Convergent Thinking

• Be affirmative• Be deliberate• Check your objectives• Improve ideas• Consider novelty

!

Page 10: Creative Storytelling TEDx Torino 2010

Train your Creativity!

What about…• a yellow hate• a green passion• a pink sound• a silent shout• a rainbow noise• a round square

• a tasteful car• a silk room• a water stone• a stone of water• a glass of nothing• a bottle of All

Page 11: Creative Storytelling TEDx Torino 2010

Train your Creativity!

Now, take those ideas and be affirmative

• I like…

• I could improve…

• What is original…

We sat by the fire in our caves, and because we were poor, we made up a taleabout a treasure mountainthat would open only for us

and because we were always defeated,we invented impossible riddles only we could solve, monsters only we could kill, women who could love no one elseand because we had survived

Because the story of our life becomes our life

Because each of us tellsthe same storybut tells it differently

and none of us tells itthe same way twice

(From “Why we Tell Stories” by Lisel Mueller)

Why we tell stories?i

Remember

1. Keep it simple: simple plot, simple characters

2. Create a contrast: all is black or white

3. Add a twist at the end, an unexpected conclusion.
