The day we met Cloud Computing..

..It was because there were customers demanding:•Managed services (web, streaming, persistence)•Scalable architecture•Rapid provisioning•Platform consistency•Extended monitoring

We were challenged by the cost of theunderlying infrastructure.

..Should the ball have been dropped?

Enter Cloud Computing!

•No upfront costs embracing Cloud Technologies •SOX compliancy•Transfer near-zero CapEx to the customer•Keep on managing services•Proximity means delivering tailored solutions to customer’s needs•Guarantee no “Vendor Lock-in”

Here be dragons!

•Eat your own dog food•It’s not about the mainstream IT customer (yet)•Cloud infrastructure peculiarities•European Cloud providers? Partnership programs?•Invest in people: approx 4 months needed to go to market

Thus, we ate our own dog food:

•PoCs and implementations on video streaming (Wowza)•Load balanced scalable LAMP architectures•MySQL scaling•ZEND Core template architecture on Amazon EC2 AMI

What we found:

•Web 2.0 architectures are those which fit bestinto the Cloud taxonomy•Leveraging vertical skills (ZEND) helps in winning contracts•Management utilities such as RightScale make Cloud Computinga viable option

It’s not about the mainstream IT

customer (yet) !!

WEB 2.0 companies use different metrics

Cloud infrastructure peculiarities (when scaling):

•Most Cloud VM implementation provide just 1 NIC•Some clustering layers become ineffective•Latency between VMs belonging to the samesolution is often unpredictable•Traditional file sharing becomes problematic(Use Cloud Storage such as S3)•“Traditional” DB scalability and HA techniques do not work.•Need “ad-hoc” DNS

European Cloud providers under consideration:

•Amazon AWS (Europe)•Flexiscale•Terremark•Sun•Your company?....What we are looking for: partnership agreements

The interoperability issue:

•We need on-premise VMs to be transferred to Cloud•Customers want to be free to choose their provider: dynamically, instantlyRightScale is, again, the right approach

Invest in people, projects:

•AUSY Cloud Computing Competence Centre is under way•Commitment to bring ZEND Server VMs to as many architectures as possible•Awaiting Microsoft•Spread the word, evangelize, connect.•Sell :)
