Watercooled Turbocharged and ATAAC.Air-to-air aftercooling provides improvedfuel economy by packing cooler, denserair into cylinders for more completecombustion of fuel and lower emissions.

Electronic Unit Injection (EUI).The electronically controlled unitinjection fuel system senses operatingconditions and regulates fuel deliveryfor optimum fuel efficiency. Mechanical Power Train. The Catmechanical drive power train and powershift transmission provide unmatchedoperating efficiency and control onsteep grades, in poor underfootconditions, and on haul roads anddrives with high rolling resistance.

1) Transmission. The Cat seven-speedplanetary power shift transmission ismatched with the direct-injectionC27 engine with ACERT™ technologyto deliver constant power over a widerange of operating speeds.

Robust Design. Designed for ruggedunderground mining conditions, theproven planetary power shift transmissionis built for long life between overhauls.

2) Lock Up Torque Convertor. Combinesmaximum rimpull and cushionedshifting of torque converter drive withthe efficiency and performance of directdrive. When engaged, lock-up providessuperior power train efficiency bydelivering more power to the wheels.

Lock-Up Clutch. Quickly releases andre-engages to reduce power train torqueloads for smoother shifting, long lifeand a more comfortable ride.

Smooth Shifting. Electronic clutchpressure control provides smoothershifts, improved serviceability andoptimizes performance.

3) Final Drives. Cat final drives work asa system with the planetary power shifttransmission to deliver maximumpower to the ground. Built to withstandthe forces of high torque and impactloads, final drives provide high torquemultiplication to further reduce drivetrain stress.

Full Floating Axles. Full floating axlesrelieve internal stresses and increasedurability. Rolled splines also provideincreased service life.

Cat Data Link. Electronically integratesmachine computer systems to optimizeoverall power train performance, increasereliability and component life, andreduce operating costs.

• Controlled Throttle Shifting. Regulatesengine RPM during shifting to reducepower train stress and clutch wearby controlling engine speed, torqueconverter lock-up and transmissionclutch engagement for smoother shiftsand longer component life.

• Economy Shift Mode. Reduces enginespeeds, resulting in decreased fuelconsumption, lower noise levels andpotentially longer engine life.

• Directional Shift Management.Regulates engine speed during directionalshifts to prevent damage caused by highspeed directional changes.

• Body-up Shift Inhibitor. Prevents thetransmission from shifting above apre-programmed gear without the bodyfully lowered.

Electronic Technician (Cat ET). Cat ETservice tool provides service technicianswith easy access to stored diagnosticdata through Cat Data Link to simplifyproblem diagnosis and increaseavailability.

Diagnostic Capability. Critical data fromthe electronic engine and transmissioncontrols, including transmission shifting,engine speed and fuel consumption,provides service technicians withenhanced diagnostic capability toreduce downtime and operating costs.

Overspeed Protection. The transmissioncontrol electronically senses engineconditions and automatically up-shiftsone gear to prevent overspeeding.If overspeeding occurs in top gear,the lock-up clutch is disengaged.

Integrated Braking System. The Cat oil-cooled braking system delivers reliableperformance and control in the mostextreme underground mining conditions.The integrated system combines theservice, secondary, parking brake andretarding functions in the same robustsystem for optimum braking efficiency.

Oil-Cooled Multiple Disc Brakes.Caterpillar four-wheel, forced oil-cooled,multiple disc service brakes arecontinuously cooled by a water-to-oilheat exchanger for exceptional, non-fade braking and retarding performance.

Brake Design. Cat oil-cooled discbrakes are designed with large discsand plates for reliable, adjustment-freeoperation and performance. Brakes arecompletely enclosed and sealed toprevent contamination and reducemaintenance.

Long Life. An oil film prevents directcontact between the discs. This designabsorbs the braking forces by shearingthe oil molecules and carrying heataway to extend brake life.

Automatic Retarder Control (ARC).Electronically controls retarding ongrade to maintain optimum engine rpmand oil cooling. Additional braking maybe applied using the manual retarder orthe brake pedal.

Faster Speeds. ARC allows the operatorto maintain optimum engine speeds forfaster downhill hauls and greaterproductivity.

Superior Control. Automatic brakemodulation offers a smoother ride andbetter control in slippery conditions,allowing the operator to concentrateon driving.

Ease of Operation. ARC increasesoperating ease, resulting in greateroperator confidence with less fatigue.

Engine Overspeed Protection.Automatically activates ARC whenengine speed exceeds factory presetlevels, regardless of operator inputs,to avoid potentially damaging engineoverspeeds.

Fuel Efficiency. The engine providesadditional retarding by runningagainst compression on downhill hauls.During retarding applications the engineECM reduces fuel injection to minimumvalue or exceptional fuel economy.

Ergonomic Layout. The AD55B operatorstation is ergonomically designed fortotal machine control in a comfortable,productive and safe environment.All controls, levers switches and gaugesare positioned to maximize productivityand minimize operator fatigue.

Protective Structure. Integral to the caband frame, both the Rollover ProtectiveStructure (ROPS) and Falling ObjectsProtective Structure (FOPS) are resilientlymounted to the mainframe to isolate theoperator from vibration for a morecomfortable ride.

Optional Enclosed Cab. Optional sound-suppressed ROPS cab provides a quiet,secure working environment. Encloseddesign provides fresh, pressurized,temperature-controlled air circulationwith air-conditioned comfort and a morecomfortable working environment.

Suspension Seat. Ergonomicallydesigned, fully adjustable suspensionseat with adjustable armrests provideoptimal operator comfort. Thick cushionsreduce pressure on lower back andthighs. Wide, retractable seat beltsprovide a secure, comfortable restraint.

Steering Column. Comfort wheel with tiltsteering provides a comfortable drivingposition, secure grip and greater control.

Monitoring System. Caterpillar ElectronicMonitoring System (CEMS) continuouslyprovides critical machine data tokeep the machine performing at topproduction levels. Displays arebacklit for easy viewing.

• Gauge Cluster. Maintains a constantdisplay of vital machine functions,including: engine coolanttemperature, brake oil temperature,engine oil pressure, and fuel level.

• Speedometer/Tachometer Module.Monitors three systems: engine speed,ground speed and gear indicator.

• Message Center. The CaterpillarElectronic Monitoring System(CEMS) includes 4 warningcategories and provides visual andaudible warning system outputs toalert operators of abnormal machinehealth conditions.

Interlock. If the operator fails to applythe park brake prior to exiting the cab,the interlock system will detect theabsence of operator input and applythe park brake, neutralize the steering,implements and transmission andcommand the engine ECM to shut downthe engine.

Body Design. Cat truck bodies aredesigned for optimal strength, capacityand durability. With improved designand the use of Hardox steel, longerservice life and lower cost per tonfigures are now evident.

Body/Chassis Integration. Caterpillartruck bodies are designed and matchedwith the integrated chassis system foroptimum structural reliability, durabilityand long life.

Fast Hoist Cycle Times. Single-stagehoist cylinders provide fast dumpcycle times of 12 seconds for raiseand 24 seconds for lower.

Load Carrying Capacity. Large targetarea provides high load carryingcapacity. Its diverging flow designgives clean load ejection, whichmaximizes production and avoidsmaterial carryback.

Truck Payload Management System(TPMS). The optional TPMS systemcalculates the payload the truck iscarrying and determines truckcycle times.

Ejector Body. The ejector body offersclean load ejection and the capabilityto work in areas with restricted overheadclearance and soft underfoot conditions.

Frame Design. The frame incorporatesa box-section design with wide and stiffframe beams to handle torque loads.The frame design decreases stress inthe hitch area and optimizes suspensiongeometry. Materials and weld jointsare matched to optimize the life ofthe structure.

Articulating/Oscillating Hitch.The articulating hitch provides thetruck with steering articulation and theoscillation ensures the truck maintainsall wheel ground contact in roughterrain. Hardened steel pins, taper rollerbearings and oscillating stops allows therear frame to move independently fromthe front frame.

Suspension System. The suspensionsystem is designed to dissipate haulroad and loading impacts for longerframe life.

Suspension Cylinders. Two variablerebound suspension cylinders connectedto an accumulator absorb shocks beforeforces get to the mainframe for longerframe life and a more comfortable ride.

Engine Shutoff Switch. A secondaryengine shutoff switch is located atground level.

Brake Systems. Four corner oil-cooledbraking system provides excellentcontrol. The service brakes and retardingsystem are actuated by modulatedhydraulic pressure, while the parkingbrake function is spring applied andhydraulic released.
