• Balance your boat’s electrical system – Determine your power requirements, provide sufficient power storage & charging capacity and set the voltage regulation level.

• Materials & Equipment – It is advisable to use marine application rated materials and equipment.

• Buying Older Boats – Pay attention to the condition of the electrical system while buying a used or older boat. The cost of correcting poor electrical systems can be very high.

• Survey – Since boats are exposed to corrosion from time to time, an electrical survey needs to be conducted at least every 5 years.

• Adding New Equipment – Make sure that your boat can comfortably accommodate new equipments without messing up with the existing system.

• Batteries – The battery surface should be clean and dry and all cables in good condition. The batteries should be easily accessible and located high above bilge. If the batteries are not being used, they must be fully charged at least once every 3 months

• Connections – All the connections should be easy to access and above bilge water levels. All mechanical connections must be kept clean and coated with moisture resisting sealant and should be locked.

• Wires & Cables - The wiring should be stranded instead of solid. All wires and cables should be above bilge water levels. The insulation should be flame retardant and moisture resistant and free form cracks. The wire color should be consistent throughout the system and should conform to all standards.
