Asperger Syndrome – A Short
Guide
Asperger Syndrome is part of autism spectrum disorders and comes under
the umbrella of pervasive developmental disorders. It is characterized by
significant difficulty in social interaction and communication. These
abnormalities are accompanied by repetitive as well as restricted interests
and behaviors and cause significant impairment in individual’s functioning.
The diagnosis of Asperger’s can be given for aforementioned problems in
absence of significant delay in cognitive or language development.
Impairment in non-verbal communication and limited ability to experience
and express empathy also are typical features of Asperger’s Syndrome.

It is difficult to identify the condition for lay people and usually goes
unnoticed for considerable amount of time. The impairment in social
interaction is not as severe as in Autism. An individual with Asperger’s
does make an attempt to approach others for social interaction. However,
because of missing of social cues from another person, the interaction may
turn out to be awkward. The restricted and repetitive interests and
behaviors add to this difficulty of social interaction. The narrow repertoire
of interests is characteristic of Asperger’s syndrome. The language
impairment in terms of poor prosody, circumstantial speech and verbosity
are also noticed. The social and communication difficulties usually persist
through adulthood.
The causes of Asperger Syndrome are not yet identified or isolated. The
genetic component issue is strongly suspected, same as Autism spectrum.
No conclusive evidence indicative of any pregnancy issues causing
Asperger’s is available at present.
• Once the condition is identified, especially during childhood, behavior
therapy or cognitive behavior therapy from a well trained professional can
significantly alleviate the suffering of the person as well as the family. The
marginal flexibility as a learnt behavior along with social skills can help a
person with Asperger’s Syndrome cope up with social demands of routine
life to a great extent. In case of severe emotional dysregulation, aggressive
outbursts, poor impulse control, medication is advised by the psychiatrists.
However, there is no ‘cure’Medication ForAsperger’s Syndrome.
